A Valentine's Day Celebration for the Young at Heart
The Basking Ridge Senior Wellness Center hosts music and a party, drawing a crowd for Valentine's Day.
There was magic and music in the air, and the color red all around, when about 75 older residents from Basking Ridge, Bernardsville and Bedminster enjoyed a Valentine's Day celebration at the Senior Wellness Center.
Jazz musician Gordon James of Middlesex performed classics, prior to the serving of a special lunch with chicken cacciatore, angel hair and angel's food cake.
The day sparked the exchange of some valentines and even a little spontaneous dancing. It also inspired many of the party guests to wear red.
"I think it's wonderful. Live music is always a plus," said Mary Doyle of Basking Ridge.
"I love it," said Loretta Nasta of Bedminster, who said she hadn't been at the center for about a year, but finally had been drawn back by word of Monday's party.
"Anytime there's a party, I'm here," said Jean Buck of Bernardsville, originally from Basking Ridge, who is more of a regular at the center.
Even at their age, many of the males in the room gathered all at one table — except for Ann Boyko, the only female seated with seven men.
Ann Boyko said she was invited to the table courtesy of her husband, Anthony Boyko — her valentine and husband of 58 years.
She said the secret to their long relationship is, "We love each other." She added, "I make amends for him and he makes amends for me."
Mary and John Croot of Bernardsville, married for 50 years, also celebrated being each other's longtime valentine.
Along with complimenting her husband, Mary Croot credited "patience" with being one of the secrets of a longtime relationship.
Asked what his secret is, John Croot, a Basking Ridge native, answered, "Ask my wife."
