Asian Feast After School at Ridge High
The Asian Culture Club presents after-school sampling of Asian food in high school cafe for those savvy enough to turn up.
The Ridge Asian Culture Club presented a veritable feast of foods from all corners of Asian at the club's after-school food tasting event in the high school cafe on Thursday. For those who showed up, it was time to pile a plate high with everything from dumplings to dessert, and all for $5.
Gina Capizzi of Basking Ridge, who said she just moved to Basking Ridge from a stint in Tokyo, marveled at the variety of foods on tables set up in a corner of the cafeteria. She pointed to Thai, Indian, Chinese and Japanese selections, which she passed along to her children, whom she said had attended an American school in Japan.
The local mom, some other adults and a high school students all stopped by during a brief period to try the cuisine, but club members were left with leftovers when the event was wrapping up after an hour.
The tables were laden with pad Thai, the Indian specialties chana masala and chicken tikka, fried rice, Indian fruit juice, a variety of dumplings and more.
Students, teachers and parents had come by when the food tasting began after school ended, said senior Anish Patel, a club member.
Some of the dishes were made by students, while others were purchased and contributed by club members, said other club members, including Mausum Shah, a senior.
There were even desserts, such as a plate of colorful fried rice puffs.
Club members John and Andy Barrasso, both sophomores, were selling water outside the cafeteria to provide something to drink along with the Indian juice.
The food tasting may be repeated next spring, Patel said.
