Basking Ridge & Area Bands to Play Benefit for Darfur

Benefit concert with five area bands scheduled for this Friday night.

This Friday night, five local bands are scheduled to play a benefit concert for Darfur at Bishop Janes United Methodist Church in Basking Ridge, said Vince Rifino, band member with GOLD. Doors open at 6 p.m., he said.

GOLD guitarist Chris Aguayo sets this show up each year, and last year brought in close to 300 people and raised more than $2,000 as a benefit to assist those who are starving in the war-torn African nation of Darfur, according to Rifino.

Aguayo attended Ridge High School and graduated in 2010, said Rifino, who said he lived in Basking Ridge before moving to Warren. Other bands, including Vasuveda and Picture Perfect, also consist of local residents.

Bishop Janes Methodist Church is at 22 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge center, Rifino said.

Tickets are $10. Rifino said he hopes the amount to be raised this year will "go above and beyond" last year's.

Rifino said he expects the concert will include a moment of silence to honor Kevin Herron and Thomas Ekberg, two Ridge High School graduates from the class of 2010 who died this week in a car accident on Route 287.
