Maureen Smith of Bernardsville goes home with a tree she's picked out at the annual Christmas Tree Sale at Bishop Janes United Methodist Church in Basking Ridge. Travis McElyea, a volunteer at the sale, said that coming to Bishop Janes for a tree is part of a decades-old tradition for many local residents who know proceeds will go for charity.

Downtown Basking Ridge is full of holiday greenery at this time of year.

The Basking Ridge Fire Co. already has put up this year's towering holiday tree, and Bishop Janes United Methodist Church is busy selling Chrismas trees. On Saturday, the Basking Ridge Garden Club laid wreaths on veterans' graves as part of the nationwide Wreaths Across America ceremony. The ceremony took place simultaneously at 600 locations across the country.

Travis McElyea of Basking Ridge, one of the volunteers at Bishop Janes, said that each year the church sells about 900 trees, raising money for charities. "We have really become a community tradition."

Area businesses also have displays on their storefronts. The holiday displays will continue through the month. One highlight will be on Christmas Eve, when the community is invited to sing Christmas carols around the large tree on the triangle in front of The Presbyterian Church of Basking Ridge.
