Community Caroling Set for Monday Night

Annual caroling around this year's holiday in Basking Ridge begins at 7 p.m. sharp.

It's a tradition that draws many every year and certainly is remembered even by those who've left Basking Ridge.

2012 Christmas Eve Holiday singalong on the Basking Ridge Green in downtown Basking Ridge is scheduled for 7 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24.

As always, no reservations are needed. Flashlights are suggested, and hot chocolate is common.

Song sheets will be distributed starting at 6:45 p.m., said Jim Felter, who has coordinated the caroling for many years. The tradition is believed to date back to the 1920s.

The caroling will be held regardless of the weather. Singers can gather around this year's holiday tree — which was a bit of a challenge to select after Sandy damaged so many trees this fall.

Likewise, musicians just can show up that night — although many enjoy coming back, year after year. Brass players who would like to play in the ensemble should meet Director Greg Lane at 6 p.m. in Westminster Hall at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1 East Oak St.

Some of the area churches have scheduled services afterward. The Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church has a family service scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
