Editor's Notebook: Out in the Storm

The roads are partially covered in slush and snow, some areas are slippery and visibility is fluctuating.

When I was a kid, every time we got hit with a major storm, my siblings and I would pretend we were reporters on location, fighting off the elements to deliver the news. Turns out it's pretty fun in real life too.

I jumped in my Durango at 11:30 a.m. and took off during a lull in the storm to survey the conditions. For the most part, when the snow isn't falling hard, travel is manageable, but not recommended. Most of the roads are covered, at least partially, in snow and slush. Visibility fluctuates with the amount of snow falling.

There were not many cars out on the roads, but that doesn't mean you can't hit traffic. On the highways, huge long lines of cars were getting stuck behind rows of salt trucks crawling their way along the road. In town, most of the cars were moving slowly, sometimes stuck together or falling in behind snowplows.

On the ground, it looked like there has been an accumulation of 3-5 inches in most places. A surprisingly large number of brave parents and kids attacked the slopes at Oak Street School and behind St. James Roman Catholic Church to go sled riding.

You could definitely notice an up tick in the amount of snow and intensity around 1:30 p.m. Conditions are supposed to worsen in the late afternoon, with a full blizzard a possibility.

The question right now is if the current precipitation, which is mostly a mixture of rain, snow and sleet, will turn into heavy snow later in the day. A lot of what has been falling this morning has been melting into puddles and slush. There has been a lot of precipitation falling though, so if it turns to strictly snow, I would guess that we'll get another four or five inches.

Nathan, these pictures are great. You're amazing and are always on top of everything here at home! I had video of the kids in the snow and sleigh riding today, but can't figure out how to upload.
