Bernards Twp. Town Hall Still Closed Tues. AM

UPDATE: Building on Collyer Lane hoped to reopen Tuesday afternoon.

The Bernards Township Town Hall at the municipal complex at 1 Collyer Lane remained closed on Tuesday morning while repairs were underway on the historic building's heating system.

The problem is with boilers that heat the structure, said Township Administrator Bruce McArthur. Once repairs are complex, the heating system will be tested, he said.

McArthur said he is hopeful that municipal employees, now in locations around the township, will be back in the building by the afternoon.

McArthur said he hoped that scheduled repairs on Tuesday morning will allow municipal offices to reopen in the afternoon Planning Board meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday to be held. The meeting's agenda includes a public hearing on the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's proposal for a mosque in Liberty Corner.

Because of a natural gas leak, town hall and municipal offices were closed on Monday, and the township announced on its website and Facebook page that the building would remain closed through Tuesday morning, at least.

Municipal employees have been moved to the Bernards Township Library and throughout the township for regular business, according to the township announcement. The township urged residents to check back if town hall is open for business on Tuesday afternoon or later in the day.

For example, the tax collection department is in the lobby of the Bernards Township police department, also located at the municipal complex.

On Monday, McArthur said Public Service Electric & Gas fixed a leak at the main meter today.

He said there also had been problems with the gas line to the generator. McArthur said the gas was been shut off to the generator until those repairs can be made. He said the heating system were generating some fumes. Some repairs were made on Monday, but others necessitate fabrication of some parts, he added.

McArthur said additional work was scheduled for Tuesday followed by air quality tests. Meanwhile, he said a complete list of employee redeployments was scrolling on the township website.
