Cops: Items Stolen From Parked Vehicles in Bernards
One vehicle had rearview mirror and E-ZPass removed, and a purse was reported taken from another, according to township police.
Bernards Township police have reported the apparent thefts of a purse left in an unlocked car, and also the removal of a rearview mirror and E-ZPass transponder from a car left parked all day in The Hills.
Police said that someone apparently stole a purse belonging to a woman who lives on Alexandria Way in Basking Ridge after the purse was left within her unlocked and running car in in the parking lot at the Zimmer Preschool at the Chabad Jewish Center, 3048 Valley Road, in Basking Ridge.
The woman, 41, said the vehicle, a 2002 Lexus, had been left parked for approximately one-half hour on Jan. 23 between 1:45 and 2:15 p.m., according to Bernards Township police.
The woman reportedly told police she left her vehicle in the parking lot while she went inside the preschool to pick up her child, police said. Her purse had been left on the front passenger seat and was not in the vehicle when she returned, according to the police report.
The police report said the purse contained an iPhone, the victim's driver's license, various credit cards and various gift cards. A business check for $3,500 and a personal check in the amount of $50 also were reported to be inside the purse, according to the township police report.
A few days later, on Jan. 25, a 38-year-old Edison resident filed a police report that an E-ZPass transponder used for area tolls had been taken from his vehicle, which had been parked throughout the day at 110 Allen Road, township police said.
The man told police he had parked his 1998 Honda in the parking lot at 8:30 am. that day and returned to his vehicle at 5:35 p.m., police said.
Upon his return, the man reportedly noticed that the vehicle's rearview mirror had been removed from the windshield and that the E-ZPass transponder also was missing, police said.
There were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle and the man could not remember whether or not he had locked the vehicle, police said. Value of the transponder is estimated to be $25.

First of all leaving an idling vehicle is a violation of the state motor vehicle code. Second, anyone who does so with the cost of fuel these days and the impact on the environment is an entirely self centered egoist. Third, insurance policies should have an exclusion for stupidity. "Oh, please steal my car and take my credit cards too."
