LETTER: U.S. Congress Candidate Supports Budget Before Borrowing Act

David Larsen, a Republican candidate for U.S. Congress, offers his views on the nation's debt and the proposed Budget Before Borrowing Act.

Editor's Note: David Larsen, a businessman from the Oldwick section of Tewksbury Township, is challenging incumbent Republican Leonard Lance for the Republican nomination for this November's election for U.S. Congress, district 7. Bernards Township will continue this year in its present 11th district, represented by U.S. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, a Republican from Morris County. At that time, Bernards Township will be joined to other towns in the Somerset Hills in being represented as part of New Jersey's 7th district in U.S. Congress.

Dear Editor,

One step Congress can take to at least slow our escalating debt burden would be the pass HR 3778 — the Budget Before Borrowing Act. In August, some Republicans entered a deal with Democrats and the President to raise the debt ceiling by $2.1 trillion in three installments.

Now we hear some of those same Republicans crying out that the United States be “restored to fiscal responsibility so that future generations might succeed as generations have succeeded generation in and generation out” (Leonard Lance 1/18/2012 ). Nice words but they fail to admit to their constituents that by constantly agreeing to continuing budget resolutions and authorizing additional borrowing, they are threatening the American dream and the success of future generations.

I do not think this is what the voters had in mind when they returned control of the House to Republicans. After all, what kind of fiscal conservative votes for the debt ceiling to be raised to fund ObamaCare?

Let me make something clear, the passage of the Budget Before Borrowing Act will not solve our debt problem. It will merely force Congress to set spending priorities. However, this is a small but necessary step to take until we elect strong willed men & women that will end the ongoing borrowing and spending and truly restore fiscal responsibility and the American dream

Congressional Candidate

I'm all for fiscal responsibility! But I am also opposed to over-simplified, cheap political sound bites. But "what kind of fiscal conservative votes for the debt ceiling to be raised to fund ObamaCare?" Really!? Are you telling us THAT is the reason the debt ceiling had to be raised? For the record, I'm not a fan of ObamaCare as it stands. BUT It is blatantly clear that the debt ceiling would have needed to be raised thanks to the disaster that is our federal government, even WITHOUT ObamaCare (just check the projections for current unchecked Medicare and Medicaid costs ). Politicians need to STOP pointing fingers and scoring cheap shots, only blaming 'the other side' for the current crisis, and work together to FIX IT,or at least make an honest bipartisan attempt. So much cheap rhetoric, so little effective action from either side except to sling mud like children in a playground. It's disappointing and disgusting.

I agree, Elizabeth. I think that is the point Larsen is making by supporting the Budget before Borrowing Act. The ill-named Balanced Control Act raised the debt ceiling by $2.1 Trillion and did very little to reduce costs. In fact, it provided funds to implement Obamacare. This alone did not create the conditions for the borrowing limit to be exhausted. However, it was somewhat shocking to find some members of Congress that claim to be fiscal conservatives and rail against Obamacare actual provide the money to fund it along with trillions of dollars for other big government programs.
