5 Sent to Hospital in Route 78 Accident, Police Say

Authorities said no immediate fatalities were reported from crash that shutdown the highway.

An accident on Route 78 eastbound in Warren Saturday shut down the highway and backed up traffic for miles.

UPDATE: Internal injuries and head lacerations were suffered in crash, police say.

The accident involved one vehicle and all five occupants were transported to area hospitals, according to New Jersey State Trooper Boazej Oczkos, who said that no fatalities had been reported as a result of the accident as of 8 p.m.

An eyewitness at the scene said the accident shut down the eastbound side of the highway, and that two medivic helicopters landed at approximately 5:15 p.m.

The right lane and the shoulder of the eastbound side of the highway were the first to be reopened, Oczkos said.

we heard all the sirens & saw the patch story. What I wonder is...why when there is a backup of traffic like this,,, and others too...why don't the police or even the fire dept. direct the cars to turn around ,,, which would let them exit the highway and go to rt 22. All with proper supervision.

Good question, but I would take a guess and say that the police/fire/ems would serve a better purpose of helping the 5 people seriously injured than help those who were stuck (inconvenienced) in traffic.
