More Than 6K Still Powerless, No School Tuesday

Facilities available for people to warm up, recharge.

More than 6,000 residents remained without power Monday night, according to an update on the Bernards Township website.

At about 9 p.m. Monday, outages in town were recorded at 6,730.

However, power had been restored to Spring Ridge and the Cedars at that time, and Lake Road again was open. Tree crews had been dispatched to Whitenack Road and King George Road by JCP&L, the 9 p.m. update said.

The website listed roads where the power company is said to be working on power, but other roads also may receive power, according to the 3 p.m. update. Bernards Township phones reportedly were down on Monday, and residents are asked to communicate via email if possible.

With continued power outages, parents were notified on Monday afternoon that school also will be closed on Tuesday. Further notification will be given on Tuesday.

A JCP&L spokesman, Ron Morano, said shortly before 3 p.m. on Monday that estimates released by JCP&L are in fact, estimates, and may vary from the numbers that are actual. He also said that sometimes the numbers may go up temporarily when certain customers whose power already was restored may be brought offline again temporarily while work is being done in that area.

Morano said that JCP&L has more than 8,000 working on power restoration, but the power company continues to deal with "big problems" in infrastructure.

The Bernards Township Library said on its website that the library will open today as a warming and recharging area, and will remain open through 9 p.m. before resuming regular hours on Tuesday. Library Director Ruth Lufkin said earlier this afternoon that wifi is working at the library.

About 400 people visited the first five hours that the library was open on Monday, Lufkin said.

The Somerset Hills YMCA in Riverwalk was scheduled to open to both members and non-members at 5:15 a.m. on Monday, providing showers, warmth and facilities. The Riverwalk Mall and nearby 100 Marketplace Mall both were functioning with power and providing food and services.

The Fellowship Deaconry at 3575 Valley Road in the Liberty Corner section also is among those offering temporary housing, warm meals, and kids activities. More information is available on the website, http://www.deaconry.org/hurricanehelp.

The township's update said: "Bernards Township has removed every tree possible. The remaining downed trees have wires and need to be removed by JCP&L. JCP&L is around town and in the process of removing them," the township's 9 a.m. update said. The update said township officials are trying to "working feverishly" to try to get more detailed information from the power company.

Halloween scheduling will follow governor's orders, but caution stressed.

The update noted that the Governor has already set an executive order setting Monday as the day for Halloween. But officials cautioned, "Please use EXTREME caution and common sense. There are wires, trees, branches and debris down everywhere. If you are taking your children out trick or treating, do it only during the day and not after the sun sets."

The library's director, Ruth Lufkin, said on the website that power is back on at the library, and the staff intends to openat 1 p.m. on Monday.

Travel in the area of the library at 32 S. Maple Ave. was still complicated by blockages on South Maple Avenue and South Finley Avenue. The downed wires at North Maple and East Oak have been cleared and the library is accessible via North Maple Avenue, Lufkin said.

Leisure Learning programs and the Current Issues Discussion Group meeting for Monday, November 5 are canceed.  Information about rescheduling of programs, where possible and appropriate, will be available at a later date, Lufkin said. Library fines will be adjusted, she said.

"Whether you need a place to be warm, to charge your devices, get information about disaster relief, or talk with someone about the experiences of this extraordinary week — or borrow a book, DVD, magazine or music CD — your library staff members look forward to welcoming you soon at Bernards Township Library," Lufkin said in a message.

The Basking Ridge Patch will continue to update this story.

I hope Bernards Township includes the specific streets being worked on today on their 12 pm update. They had it yesterday but for some reason, did not include the list of streets on the 9 am update this morning.

Has anyone else noticed that the 'Out of Power' number for Bernards Twp is INCREASING instead of DEcreasing?? It is now UP to >6,800. Last night it was about 800 less. Hmmm....

I drove by about 45 minutes ago and there were 4 power trucks there working. The damage is pretty extensive I don't know how long it will take, but hopefully the power is back on tonight.

The township phones are conveniently down, what a joke. Been 24 hours and no progess made... still more than half the town powerless. Pathetic and unacceptable on both the township and jcp&l's part.

Wheres the Township committee hiding these days? In their warm and cosy homes! Man are they useless, lets all make sure we vote the same people back in! They don't fight for the people of this township, they are more concerned for their future political careers then us! I haven't seen any of them waiting on gas lines, guess they have the privilege of filling up at the engineering complex, Very sad.

Me too! I live in spring ridge and it's been turning into a ghost town. I don't know why King George Road hasn't been more of a priority. It's right by a Route 78 exit so it's a real headache to get on Route 78. It would provide power and access to the gas station and Dewy Meadows. In theory, it should provide power on to Spring Ridge, etc. but I don't know where my power comes from. It does look clear onto the substation near Lyons Mall.

I find it interesting that JCPL will provide a detailed projection of the number of accounts it expects to connect over the next 7 days but our town council cannot get the details behind the projections. Still no JCPL crews anywhere near Edward Ct or Lake Road.

I don't wanna put a damper on hopes but, I think it's just JCP&L responding to the complaints that the wires have been there, dangling "dangerously" for 7 days, and no attention has been paid. I have a sinking feeling they're just going to move them out of the way, which *would* be an improvement in our lives, but likely set aside their repair for a later date.

Now why would they likely set aside their repair for a later date? How could that possible benefit them? Your comment makes absolutely no sense. I am betting you have a negative outlook on life.

If I could just drive through from 78 to Spring RIdge this evening, that would be huge. Didn't multiple consecutive telephone poles get kocked down there? I would think that means the power won't be back on until they install new poles.

King George Road seems to have been taken off the 3pm road closure list. If all they did was clear the wires, it's a waste to have 4 power trucks work on that.

Latest update from Bernards Twp Twitter account no longer shows King George Rd on the list of closed roads. @Spring Ridge Resident may be correct that they just moved them out of the way, but at least it's a start and we can get through to Dewey/Exxon/78. http://bit.ly/VvatmF

Is power back on in all of Spring Ridge? I have been in PA staying with a relative and don't want to drive the 2 hours back if it's still out. Plus I could offer my place up to another relative who doesn't have power for this cold night.

Took a drive through Spring Ridge, all the streets lights and such are on, plenty lit windows, so I'd say power is back for all in Spring Ridge. Though King George Road is still blocked off at the entrance to Spring Ridge.

S.Finley is not cleared with multiple poles down from St James down to East Lewis. Heard from someone who spoke to a power company worker from Ohio who said that stretch alone is a three day job. So my guess is the weekend for it to open if we are lucky. When HS opens traffic will be a nightmare if Finley is still closed.

Here is something possibly off topic but I just want to air it out: After a storm like Sandy or other prior winter storms, we often see a mixture of damage from either fallen tree or tree branches onto the power lines or pole damages. There is nothing we can do about the poles but it amazes me how many more trees are waiting to fall! There are just way too many trees too close to the power lines in Bernards, even after Sandy, which means one thing: increasing chance that more power outages if winter storms are severe.

There should be some type of legislation--I hate govt interference but things are different when one tree can knock off power to the whole town-- to ensure that all power lines going through private properties are cleared of any possible falling tree branches. It is simply public hazard. Otherwise, we help to create the problems that will invariably overwhelm the repair crews. No trees near the power line means much less pending repair.
