Report: Katie Holmes Hires N.J. Lawyer for Cruise Divorce

Jonathan Wolfe, brother of top 'Young Lawyer' in state who lives in Basking Ridge, reportedly will take divorce case for actress Katie Holmes.

 

Actress Katie Holmes is lawyering up to prepare for her divorce and, according to the Los Angeles Times, has selected one of best to represent her—attorney Jonathan Wolfe, of a Livingston law firm.

Wolfe's brother, David, is a Basking Ridge resident and a member of the Skoloff & Wolfe law firm in Livingston that was founded by their father. David Wolfe was earlier this year named "Young Lawyer of the Year" by the N.J. State Bar Association.

It was originally reported in the Los Angeles Times that in the aftermath of announcing her five-year marriage with Tom Cruise was ending, Holmes has hired Jonathan Wolfe to represent her in what is expected to be a high-profile divorce proceeding.

According to the firm’s website, Wolfe focuses his practice on sophisticated business litigation and significant matrimonial disputes.

Wolfe is known as an expert in financial disputes and uses this expertise to represent leaders or the spouses of leaders from the business, professional and entertainment/sports communities in complex matrimonial matters. 

According to his profile, a significant portion of his practice is devoted to business valuation, the treatment of trust assets in divorce and the protection of non-marital assets. He also assists clients in all other aspects of matrimonial and family law, including custody, parenting time, and the negotiation and preparation of prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.

Wolfe is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of New York and New Jersey, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second and Third Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.

Before joining Skoloff & Wolfe in 2003, Wolfe practiced as a member of the Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy litigation department in New York. He received his B.A. from Cornell University, with honors, and his J.D. from New York University School of Law.

Cruise and Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage, People.com reported Friday.  Cruise, who turned 50 on Tuesday, wed actress Holmes, 33, in an Italian castle in November 2006. They have a 6-year-old daughter, Suri.

David Wolfe said in an interview in May that he has clients in the Basking Ridge and Warren Township area, but also nationwide, including the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco.

The “Young Lawyer of the Year” is the top award given by the NJSBA's Young Lawyer Division, and is presented to a lawyer under the age of 36, or in practice less than five years, according to an announcement from Skoloff & Wolfe. Other criteria is that the recipient combine personal and professional achievements merit special recognition, and who has additionally made significant community and public service contributions, has actively participated in the organized bar and has stood out in the areas of professional skill, integrity and courtesy.

David Wolfe has been featured or quoted in a wide variety of local and national publications, including The Star-Ledger, Forbes.com, Marketwatch.com, GlobeSt.com, NJBIZ, The Washington Post, WSJ.com, Law.com, New York Law Journal, and New Jersey Law Journal, the announcement said.
