Revitalized Boys Soccer Scores OT Win Against Highly-Rated Rival
Korn scores after five minutes in first overtime to capture victory for Devils on Senior Night.
The Ridge High School boys soccer team celebrated 'Senior Night' hosting Monroe Township for the last game of their 2011 regular season. A game that should have on paper gone to the highly-rated Monroe was taken by the Devils in overtime, 2-1.
| 1st | 2nd | OT | FINAL | |
| Monroe (12-6-1) | 0 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| Ridge (7-10-1) | 0 | 1 | 1 | 2 |
IN SHORT
The Ridge team has been a winning streak and look like the team they were expected to be in the pre-season. Tonight, facing a Central, Group 4 NJSIAA State Tourney 3rd seed, Ridge looked solid from the start. Senior Randy Regner broke the ice scoring the Ridge goal. Shortly thereafter, Monroe knotted the score. In overtime, both teams had a run, but when the Monroe goalie came out to take on Zack Lyons, the deflected ball went to Brian Korn who knocked it wide of the scrambling keeper and into the net.
DEVIL OF THE GAME
Brian Korn, forward — Korn was active in the transition and pushing the ball on goal. His shot in OT on the rebound decided the game.
THEY SAID IT
"The first half was a bit ugly and frantic for both teams, there wasn't a lot of passing or combinations. The second half it settled down. But not until after the two goals, the two fastest goals I think you'll ever see after the halftime. I think both teams dodged a few bullets, certainly we did. A credit to Monroe, they really pinned us back for long periods of the game. These guys are in a good vein of form right now. Their attitude and determination is tremendous. I am really pleased with that win. We are hitting the right form at the right time, going into the state tournament." — Ridge coach Ken Cherry
"It is great how we have been playing lately. We are 6-2 in our last 8 games. We have really picked it up. We are looking forward to the states and Bridgewater." - Captain Jameson Lochhead
Up Next - Ridge will travel to No. 1 seed Bridgewater for the first round of the North 2, Group 4 State Tournament on Tuesday, 2 p.m.
