Ridge Girls Snap Losing Streak With Comeback Over Phillipsburg

A 13-2 run to end the fourth quarter gave the Red Devils their first win in eight games.

Seniors Sam Fama and Susan Galgano each scored 12 points and junior Maria Langas added 11 to lead the Basking Ridge Red Devils as they snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 48-39 win over the Philipsburg Stateliners Friday night.

The final score, however, was not indicative of how close the two teams stayed throughout the contest.

"That was a great game," said Ridge coach Cherie Stappenbeck. "They played well, we fought hard to get the win."

Neither team led by more than six points until late in the fourth quarter, when the Red Devils went on an 13-2 run to seal the win.

"We closed out the game well," said Stappenbeck. "Took good care of the ball and made our free throws."

The Stateliners were the ones who took the early lead and had the momentum on their side. Loren Kaiser's slash to the basket put Philipsburg up 10-4 halfway through the first quarter.

Though the game stayed close, Philipsburg seemed to dictate the pace of the game early on. Every time Ridge would put together a run in the first half, the Stateliners would answer and broaden their lead.

Langas nailed a jumper to get Ridge within 18-17 late in the second quarter. The Red Devils had got within one before and failed to capitalize, but this time Fama hit a huge three to give Ridge its first lead of the game at 20-18 with 2:15 left in the half.

"We stopped taking care of the ball," said Stateliners coach Nicole Savino. "Stopped boxing out and controlling the paint."

Philipsburg made two baskets in the final 17.4 seconds to make it 24-20, but Alexis Irwin answered for the Devils with a momentum-shifting three-point play just before the half.

"That shot was huge for us," said Stappenbeck. "It helped turn the momentum in our favor."

Ridge came out the half with a game-changing 9-2 run. Irwin nailed a three and Fama connected on back-to-back shots to make it 32-26 with 2:49 left in the third quarter.

The Stateliners, however, did not let up. Led by Kaiser's hot hand and Taylor Bay Sutton's inside play and ability to draw fouls, Phillipsburg kept attacking.

Sutton hit two free throws at the end of the third and Kaiser nailed back-to-back jumpers to open the fourth. Kaiser's three with 6:43 left made it 36-35, and her impressive drive to the basket seconds later re-took the lead for the Stateliners.

The Red Devils went to Fama, who drew a foul on a three point attempt and made two of her three free throws. Langas added a put back and Fama nailed a huge three to make it 43-39 with 3:38 left.

Philipsburg had opportunities to cut the lead, but forced their shots with the Devils playing keep away on the other end. Ridge went 3-for-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute to seal the win.

Irwin finished with seven points for Basking Ridge and Misaki Ishii added four. Kaiser led Phillipsburg with 11 points and Sutton had 10. Alysan Blazejewski , Torrie Weller and Michele Duffy each added six points for the Stateliners.

The Red Devils (4-11) will play next at Vorhees on Feb. 2.
