Senior Wellness Center Activities Set For September

Tai chi, art exhibits, tomato tasting, exercise and "pool sharks" on roster.

 

The Somerset County Senior Wellness Center, operated by the Somerset County Office On Aging, has announced its September program schedule.  All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed.  Call for lunch reservations by 11 a.m. the day before you wish to come.  For more information, contact the center at 908-204-3435. 

The Somerset County Senior Wellness Center is at 202 Mt. Airy Road in Basking Ridge. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

  • Bingo: Every Friday, 10:45 a.m.
  • Bridge: Every Tuesday, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Computer Class: Every Thursday, 10:45 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Computer Lab: Daily, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (call for availability)
  • Healthy Bones Class: Friday, 10:30 a.m. (doctor's note and registration required)
  • Mahjong: Every Tuesday, noon to 3 p.m.
  • Pool Sharks: Pool table available daily, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Senior Flex Class (upper- and lower-body exercise): Every Monday and Thursday, 10:30 a.m.
  • Social Dancing: Every Tuesday, 10:45 a.m.
  • Tai Chi: Every Monday (call to register); intermediate classes are 1 to 2 p.m., and beginners classes are 2 to 3 p.m.
  • Walking Club: Every Friday, 10:30 a.m.
  • Sing-Along Senior: Every second and fourth Thursday of the month, 10:45 a.m.
  • Art exhibit by local artists: Open 9:30 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Sept. 6: Holiday, center closed
  • Sept. 7: "Move Today: Exercise and Getting Fit" by Erin Toomey, Office on Aging Health Promotion Coordinator
  • Sept. 8: "What is a Phytochemical?" by Nancy Rosa Mejias, Rutgers Cooperative Extension
  • Sept. 10: A fund-raising car wash ($5 per vehicle); all proceeds go to the Senior Wellness Center Activity Fund (rain date is Sept. 24)
  • Sept. 13: A Tai Chi demonstration, "What is Tai Chi and is it for You?" (registration forms will be available for fall classes)
  • Sept. 16: "Heart Healthy Eating," a "Lunch and Learn" program, 10 a.m. to noon (advance registration required)
  • Sept. 21: "Let's Make a Deal," the Monty Hall's 1963 game show (handbags and deep pockets recommended)
  • Sept. 22: "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?"—a trivia game that will take you back to elementary school
  • Sept. 23: "Grandma Moses," on her contribution and influence on American folk art, with a painting workshop
  • Sept. 28: "The Great Tomato Tasting" by Nick Polanin, Rutgers Cooperative Extension
