Nearly 7,000 Still Without Power in Bernards

Riverwalk YMCA again opens early Monday, North Finley and Maple avenues open.

Nearly 7,000 Bernards JCP&L customers remained without power early Monday morning.

According to the utility company's outage map, 6,660 were still out as of 5 a.m.

The Bernards Township website said Sunday night that JCP&L was reporting 6,314 out of 13,047 Bernards Township customers remained without power, and about 52 percent of customers have had power restored. More detailed JCP&L updates and also information on election polling sites are on the website.

Food, water and ice were available at Bernards Township police headquarters, Lt. Mike Shimsky, who heads the township's Office of Emergency Management, said at 5:40 p.m. on Sunday.

Shimsky said he did not have a status report on Halloween trick or treating, which the governor had delayed statewide until Monday. Nearby Bernardsville has called off trick or treating until further notice after power is restored.

YMCA at Riverwalk to open 5:15 a.m. Monday

Meanwhile, the Somerset Hills YMCA is due to open again at 5:15 a.m. on Monday, to both non-members and members alike. More than 120 non-members had signed in for showers on Sunday, the staff said. The facility is scheduled to remain open until 10:30 p.m. on Monday. However, the YMCA's main facility at 140 Mount Airy Road remained closed, without power, as of Sunday night.

On Sunday afternoon, the Hills Highlands Master Association clubhouse was also reported to be open for residents for showering and powering up laptops and cellphones.

Meanwhile, some previously blocked roads had been opened as of about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Status update on Maple and Finley avenues

Maple Avenue from Collyer Lane north to Route 202 was then open, although the large tree blocking South Maple Avenue by Lord Stirling Stable remained closed, said Township Committeeman John Malay.

North Finley also is open from the center of Basking Ridge to Route 202 in Bernardsville, Malay confirmed at 3 p.m. However, he said that South Finley from the center of town south remained closed, although it was being worked on and a police vehicle was able to pass through.

School remains closed on Monday

Bernards schools again are closed on Monday. School officials had asked that residents check the township website for further updates.

JCP&L updates

The 3 p.m. update said JCP&L is currently working or expected to work soon on the following roads, to restore the power to some, if not all of the homes on these roads:

Fawn Lane, Rickey Lane, Century Court, Harvest Way, Pacer Court, Somerville Road, Spruce Street, Washington Valley Road, Long Road, Parkwood Lane, Cambridge ln Cedar Street, Kings Ridge Road, Primrose Lane, Carriage Way, Deer Ridge Road, Emerald Valley in Milito Way, Mountain Road, Van Holten Road, Old Stagecoach Road, Ray Court, Evergreen Place Shadowbrook Lane, Dogwood Way, Johnston Circle, Martinsville Road and Mt Prospect Road.

Hey Denise, Diane here on West Oak. I don't see ANY utility activity on either West Oak, South Alward OR Mt. Airy. Mt. Airy has TWO transformers down which is most likely effecting both of us. Heard rumor they are hoping to have our power restored within 44-48 hours...just in time for the storm on Wednesday with 50 mph winds. Can't wait!

King George road is not mentioned in JCP&L priority list. You will have to call JCP&L to register in their system that this area has not yet received power.

I would suggest everyone follow JCP_L on twitter, and post requests for help. That worked for us. One thing which would also help is if you take a photo of the downed wires in front of A&P and post it on twitter and the location, mentioning both the assisted living facility and that it feeds homes along Spring Valley Blvd, someone might notice and send a crew out. Stay safe.

The communities of the Barons and Spring Ridge contain many residents. This shoud be a priority based on this fact.

Why is the tree on Maple Ave not removed? This is a major throughway.

Let's get serious. There should be a system to get the most people up the fastest. The current system s makes very little sense.

3 JCP&L trucks on Church Street in Basking Ridge this afternoon replaced toppled utility pole. Later one truck stopped by our house on Mine Brook Rd. Driver said they are working 16 hour shifts and they too must wait in line for cars for thier own cars. But the best news was they said they would have the power on in the neighborhood by dark -- and they kept their word as light are on in neighbors' homes as well as ours. Incredible service asfer we saw all the trees and poles down throughout town. I don't know how they did it so quickly.

GN-So the township just posted the number of homes that will get power each day this week. If they have this information they must know the streets or ares of town that these numbers are for. Dont you think it would be a good idea for the township or jcpl to release this information so those effected could plan their week? What is so frustrating is the total lack of information provided by both jcpl and the town...we should know when trees will be cleared from the roads and the day that our power for each of our homes will be turned on...these vague updates with numbers that are not consistent from hour to hour onlymake a bad situation worse...total incompetence and lack of planning equates to the mess we find ourselves in

Gary I could not Gree with you more. JCPLs website gives no information. Yet again, PSEG resumes power to their customers faster, and gives out better info. We really need to rise up and make our leaders switch utility companies. JCPL has left us in the dark, literally and figuratively, too many times now.

Gary, you are so right! This has been a nightmare! The town needed to get the information out, even if it meant going door to door to check on people!-My mother is 90 years old-we took her out of her house very upset last Thursday. She wants to be in her little home off Mt. Airy home but we can't find out if her power is back on. We are over an hour away and don't want to take the trip until we know for sure, for gas reasons alone. We found my mom freezing in her home-she has no cell phone- but will now! No one from the town helped us. I called the police department several times and they were no help. Today I spoke to a lady there taking calls and she was nasty and basically told me she had no way of knowing which streets in Bernardsville had power. The town isn't that big- you're telling me the police aren't driving around seeing if people need help? When the electricity went out the people of B'ville were abandoned and the many senior citizens who have lived there for over 40 years and are in their late 80's and early 90's remain in their homes freezing. Someone told me that it was the Hills that got top preference in all this! There needs to be a town meeting after this is over! I grew up in Bernardsville and the old time police force and fire department would never have handled things the way the town has in this emergency. JCPL should be held responsible as well-They are totally incompetent and obviously they were not prepared for such an emergency.

Madison has their own electric company and so they are not at the mercy of Jcpl because they do all the work themselves and just feed off a Jcpl main line. Supposedly they make a profit. Maybe bville should do something like that or find an alternative to being at the back of Jcpl priority list. But this reconfiguring should not raise taxes.

Old Farm Road in Bernards Twp has been blocked by fallen trees and downed wires. To the best of my knowledge, there has been no onsite assessment from either DPW or JCPL. Private contractors have done the tree work and although there is passage as of Sunday 11-4, it is over and under unstable wires and through trees that are resting on wires. Certainly emergency vehicles could not get through. If you get your power from Old Army Road, it is difficult to determine what is down. I have yet to even see Old Farm and/or Old Army Road mentioned on the lists that name closed streets. The only communication that we have had is from the nixle communications from the local PD s and eservice from bernards.org and patch. Not much from our governing body or mayor. Can we get something specific? Rumors are rampant. Let"s clarify accurately.

November 5 Update:

I am pleased to announce that the power is back on at Bernards Township Library. We plan to open at 1pm Monday and remain open until our usual 9pm closing time. On Tuesday we will resume a regular schedule.

As of Sunday evening, travel in the area is still complicated by blockages on South Maple Avenue and North and South Finley Avenue. The downed wires at North Maple and East Oak have been cleared and the Library is accessible via North Maple Avenue.

Leisure Learning programs and the Current Issues Discussion Group meeting for Monday, November 5 are cancelled. Information about rescheduling of programs, where possible and appropriate, will be available at a later date.

Fines due to this extended closure will be adjusted as needed. Please contact us if you have Library materials that are due or overdue and are not able to get to the Library.

Whether you need a place to be warm, to charge your devices, get information about disaster relief, or talk with someone about the experiences of this extraordinary week - or borrow a book, DVD, magazine or music CD - your Library staff members look forward to welcoming you soon at Bernards Township Library.

Other homes in the Hills have power since Thursday. The Hills Clubhouse next door has power but homes don't. There are no fallen trees or wires in the Hills.. The real question is why are the power lines not buried underground? If they were so many of these problems would be avoided. There's no way it didn't get escalated in JCP&L by voices louder than any Spring Ridge resident. I saw a white pickup truck parked by the draping cables this morning. Hopefully we'll see more visible effort this afternoon.

This type of catasrophic event, is something most of us in this area have never experienced. We have seen this mass destruction all over the world and now it has hit us. Most of the storms that get near us, miss us, or just give us a brush-by. We should always prepare for the worst. What we lack in this town is communication to the people regarding what's going on. We lack the leadership of town officials that have no idea what to do when something like this happens. I know once we are back to normal many will forget all that has happened. But now its time to set plans for the future, on what this town will do for its residents for future storms like this, that could hit us at any time. Set up our budgets on what emergency equipment we need and set up an emergency plan that everyone should follow.
We cannot blame the workers for the work not getting done. We need to thank them for what they have done so far. They are doing all they can, while trying to be safe at the same time. They have families too and also may be in the same situation we are in. Maybe they are not just "sitting, doing nothing", most of these workers have been working through the nights, trying to restore power to OUR homes and businesses....They too, deserve a few hours rest...Even if it is in their work trucks...

Agreed, we cannot blame the workers of the utility companies, they are working hard no doubt. They are issued a W.O. and that is what they follow. But, the company directors, managers, etc are to blame absolutely. As our the townships government and the most of the condo associations have been lackluster as well. I cannot believe Spring Ridge is now on day 8 of the outage. It is unacceptable, no matter how catastrophic this storm was. A more thorough scope and plan of readiness and preparedness would have gone a long way to cope slightly better.

i spoke to jcpl yesterday as we also have no water, and my mother is in her 90s with some medical equipment (we do have a generator) . although we are considered a priority, she could only tell me that we should expect to be online by wednesday. frustrating isnt the word.

Hello, can anyone tell us the status of Spencer Rd.? Is it passable? We are worried about our parents living at the intersection of Spencer and Culbertson, this is between W. Oak and Lake. We are trying to contact them via a neighbor to convince them to come up to Vermont. I wish they had come here before the storm. What a nightmare for everyone from NJ to Queens! Thank you for any information you can give us.

I have a family member who is a police officer in town. I for one, have had no power for 8 days and STILL, am quite certain that a "cat" could not do a better job policing our town... For the most part, a lot of residents in this town, still have a roof over their head, places to go and eat, generators, working smartphones and laptops, fireplaces and running water... People need to gain some perspective what they COULD have lost.... I am proud of the police dept and all they have been doing around-the-clock, to help the residents of this town, as well as other towns in need.... It's a real shame that people can still point fingers and try to place blame on those who are actually trying to solve the problems we are facing....

Up until, I believe 2 day ago, where could I have gone to eat?
The ready to eat meals for residents only started 2 maybe 3 days ago. Now I see the church on E Oak & Finley is also providing hot meals. Which is great and very generous, but it was at least 5 if not 6 days without anything but charging stations.

I am sure the PD was doing what they could and what they should be doing as per SOP's. But as far water, food and warmth during the first 5 or 6 days, fail.

Finally, they are stepping to do what they should have been doing from the start.
So please, if you're going to defend the township as in an opinion, get the all of facts stated correctly first. Like I said prior, D- for Bernards.

We were in a similar situation (Bernardsville, on the border of Basking Ridge) -- no power for a week, with two kids under 4 y.o. Both got sick, and we finally decided to leave town. Anyone with kids (or elderly family) who has enough gas to drive west will find power on, no gas lines, etc., about an hour and twenty minutes away from town. Our kids are finally getting better after being in a heated place for a few days. Please take care of your loved ones and look in on neighbors. Use shelters if you need to, but keep warm. These temperatures are too dangerous to ignore.

I'm getting updates every 3 hours and then some from the town because I had signed up with the emergency notification system. From the police, fire, public works, administration and TC, all been feverishly working 24/7, despite no power etc in own homes. Done all tree work they can do without JCPL. Kudos to them! Given the scope of mass disaster, with 1 million people still out of power, etc., if you think efforts aren't being run and assets being deployed by the Governors office, you are naive. Your calls, your neighbors calls, the mayors calls, are as they say, pi&$;!g in the wind. My guess is that he's focused on shelter, food and water, and that as horrible as it is to be stuck in this, if it's not life threatening, it's not a priority. If it is, you need to get to a shelter, and if you can't get there, call emergency personnel to take you there.

I've been going to bernards.org for the updates and have seen how it says you can sign up with the emergency notification system, but I can't find WHERE to sign up. Can you tell us please?

trying to help with inf:

Via Facebook by Bernards Township at 6pm yesterday:

Bernards Township is working feverishly to get more detailed information from JCP&L about power restoration. We have had a conference call with JCP&L and this is what we have learned – Bernards Township has 6 circuits servicing the township, all of which are in good shape. They are currently working or expected to work soon on the following roads, to restore the power to some, if not all of the homes on these roads:

JCP&L’s website currently shows 6314 without power, down from 7,897 out of 13,047 Bernards Township customers still without power this morning. That’s almost 52% with power restored in Bernards Township.

If you add up all the numbers for each day they do not add up to the total outs - they only add up to 7054. What happens to the last 793? SOL??

I agree regarding the posting of an accurate list of streets. It's my understanding that once yellow caution tape has been strung up to downed lines, JCP&L has that street in its system. If that's the case, then why isn't a list of all affected streets posted? We're all tired and frustrated. We're also all grateful for what we have, so I don't think anyone needs to be chastized for venting anger over the lack of useful information. Also, for those citizens who do have power, PLEASE reach out to your neighbors who don't, and invite them over to do laundry, watch some TV, charge devices, and warm up. Please be as generous as you can.

I commend the volunteers and residents who stepped up to help, as usual it is the average citizen who is most helpful, productive and reliable. While the government, from the township to the state is always unreliable. Slow to react, poor judgement and foresight of any kind. The insult of course, is that we have to PAY the government, while they scratch their heads and ponder what to do, while residents and citizens jump into action. In my view, the township get's a D-. Unacceptable, no surprise.

Dorchester Dr. in the Hills has no power either. There is no explaination as to why only a section of the Hills is still without power. There are no fallen trees or wires. This is frustrating to say the least but there is nothing we can do about it. Calling JCP&L is a waste of time. Can a township official please explain?

I wonder what grid Hamilton Woods, Hamilton Crest and Amherst Mews are connected to. We still don't have power as of this morning even though the town's announcement from last night said that Constitution Way was one of those streets where power was supposed to be restored. I guess we are all just left to wonder what's going to happen next.

We are waiting patiently on Normandy Court off Woods End. Neighbors helped clear 2 trees from road and driveways...perhaps if we had left them someone would show up to see what is going on? Made mistake of driving through Spencer, on our way to vote at alternate site, and could not believe the devastation--looks like it just happened! Trying to be good sports and look out for each other...while...we...wait.
