Skiing with Mayor is On For Saturday
The snow complicated travel also prompts at cross-country skiing as part of Bernards Township Wellness Campaign for this Saturday.
Mayor Carolyn Gaziano confirmed Saturday she will hold a cross-country skiing event at 11 a.m. at the Somerset County Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Rd, in Basking Ridge. The free event is open to all, but participants are asked to bring their own skis.
The EEC requires at least four inches of snow on the ground to open the trails at the park for cross-country skiing.
This is Gaziano's second attempt at scheduling cross-country skiing. Last time in January, insufficient snow changed the event to a fitness walk along the trails with the mayor — which Gaziano said she would do again if the snow isn't deep enough.
An anticipated series of fitness events are part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign for 2013, which also are designed to provide a way for residents to explore local parks within Basking Ridge, Gaziano said at the beginning of the year.
Gaziano then said cross-country skiing, if possible, would be followed by such fitness activities as hiking and biking.
The Environmental Education Center has several miles of trails suitable for cross-country skiing when weather conditions permit. The trails are mostly level and wide, making the wooded area particularly suitable for beginners or novice skiers, according to an announcement from the township.
Bring own cross-country ski equipment
Participants are asked to bring their own ski equipment. Skiing is allowed only on those areas identified for skiing.
Those who are interested can call 908-766-2489 on Saturday to confirm further details.
There is no charge to ski at the EEC.
"I am very proud of the Wellness Campaign kick-off event and pleased that we will showcase this beautiful Somerset County facility located in Bernards Township," Gaziano said in an announcement on Thursday.
She said she wanted to thank the Somerset County Park Commission and staff for their cooperation in setting up the event
The Mayor’s Wellness Campaign is an initiative to promote active living and healthier lifestyles for the men, women and children of Bernards Township, according to the announcement released through the township clerk's office on Thursday. Various fitness and exercise events with Bernards Township Committee members will be held during the year.
