Race-goers and revelers had a full day of sunshine and action at the fundraising Far Hills Races this past weekend.

Maureen Brennan, right, and Katherine Brennan, second from right, both of Basking Ridge joined friends (from left) Nick Spencer of Haddonfield, Andre Coutu of Vermont, Jennifer Hagerty of Westfield, Sharon Sofield of Bridgewater in paying tribute to the Royal Wedding at the Far Hills Race, complete with fascinator hats and Waterford glasses, an homage to the chandeliers in Westminster Abbey.
Betty Merck of Bedminster, center, accepts the trophy for the Gladstone race at the Far Hills Race Meeting. Her horse, Wanganui, won the two and one-eighth mile race – the fifth of the day.
Marjorie Rich of Basking Ridge, second from left, and friends Royalynne Hourihan of Morristown, Larisa Turetsky of Bedminster, second from right, and Alice Minutello of Belle Mead, right, have been coming to the race since the early 1990s.

For many people, the party is as much a part of the Far Hills races as the horses. Or maybe more.

Tens of thousands again attended the races, which are a fundraiser for Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. The Far Hills Race Meeting, held each October at Moorland Farm in Far Hills, has been a significant source of donations for the Steeplechase Cancer Center that is affiliated with Somerset Medical.

Some race-goers return year after year. Take Alan Robbins of Basking Ridge, a former Bernardsville resident, who has his own Far Hills race outfit.

Each year, Maureen Brennan of Basking Ridge brings her stuffed "Foxy" to the races. The fox is pictured at the far left of the photo included in this story.

Many bring their own decorations and plan major parties around the event that can spill over into the rest of the evening (or the weekend.)
