Father Rick Morley from St. Mark's Episcopal Church conducted the blessing of the hounds, as in previous years, at the 3rd annual Strong Dogs Day from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge. Morley assured the crowd the blessing was "interdenominational — your dog does not have to come to our church."
Patch's Phil Meade was be at a table representing the Basking Ridge Patch, the new Bernardsville-Bedminster Patch throughout Strong Dogs Day. Local Editor Linda Sadlouskos and photographer Joe Sperling were at the event for part of the day.

The Somerset Hills YMCA's Strong Dogs Day went off without a hitch on Saturday outdoors at the Y's main Basking Ridge facility at 140 Mount Airy Road, even with a wide selection of leashed pooches of all types and sizes in close proximity.

Canines — accompanied by almost 350 humans, according to the YMCA — were welcome to drop by to see demonstrations by such groups at K9 Miracles's training demonstration, participate in fun races and meet and greet other pets and pet owners.

The day included treats for people and pets, and information to learn about how to care for your best friend. Exhibitors set up tables. The Basking Ridge Patch and a number of area businesses — including Color Me Mine of Bernardsville, which provided usable dog bowls for painting.

The event is a fundraiser to offer assistance through the Strong Kids program to those in the community who cannot afford YMCA programs.

Professor and I really enjoyed our day at Strong Dogs. The weather was perfect and "Pro" just loved all of the attention he received from the adults and kids at the event. He also made a lot of new doggy friends and was greatful for the Blessing of the Hounds. Thanks to the Basking Ridge YMCA for such a wonderful experience! We'll see ya next year :)
