Know a young person or group who has accomplished something special, achieved a milestone or who has gone out of their way to help someone else? Let us know, and they might be our next Whiz Kid(s).

This week, we are recognizing a high school junior, Bianca Pichamuthu, whose talent with photography has a current exhibit of her work at the Bernards Township Library, but who also uses her talent to help preserve the history of Basking Ridge.

Whiz Kids of the Week: Bianca Pichamuthu

  • Whiz Kids' Major Activity: Bianca has a display of her photography on display at Bernards Township Library from February through April. She is passionate about photography and has enjoyed taking photographs of nature and landscapes on her visits around the world. She hopes to major in film and photography in college. She also volunteers and helps Somerset Historical Society preserve the history of Basking Ridge through film and photography.
  • Whiz Kids' School/Church/Community Center: Junior at Ridge High School.
  • Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: An Honor Roll student, Bianca's photography is not only on display currently at the township library, but also will be featured at the Watchung Arts Center and will be on exhibit from June to August at the Contemporary Art Center in Bedminster. She has worked with mentors at The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills, David Becker and Brooks Betz, to preserve the history of the town through film and photography and gain some real experience.
  • Whiz Kids' Key to Being Noteworthy:  Bianca's family moved to Basking Ridge when she was four months old and they have been here since. She has a strong sense of community service and has been a Girl Scout for over 10 years and has completed her Silver Award and has recieved the Ridge High School community service award each year. She is also on the Jewish Community Center Swim team (State Champions). Her mother, Reena  Pichamuthu, said Bianca has been lucky to work with many mentors and teachers in the "village" that is Basking Ridge, including artist Cinder LeDell, her teachers, and Niruali Shah, a former Ridge High School student currently in college, who has taken the time to stop by to give her great advice on academics and college, and more. "Without all these wonderful people and many more who have unselfishly volunteered their time to help Bianca achieve her goals, she may not have been where she is today," her mother said.

About this column: Each week we will feature the accomplishments of one lucky Basking Ridge kid or group. The accolades don't have to be academic or athletic, but something deserving of the spotlight!
