Two Cars Collide at 4-Way Stop in Liberty Corner

Summons issued to one driver for failure to stop and yield at 4-way stop installed last year.

Bernards Township Police said a ticket was issued to a Basking Ridge woman driving east along Liberty Corner Road toward Liberty Corner Village for allegedly failing to stop at the four-way intersection stop with Somerville Road, and allegedly hitting another car in the intersection.

The driver of that vehicle, a 2012 Jeep Liberty, apparently ran the stop sign on Liberty Corner Road shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday, according to the police report.

The police report said a 2005 Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old Basking Ridge female was crossing the intersection, heading north on Somerville Road in the direction of Harry Dunham Park, when she was struck by the Jeep's driver. Two witnesses said the Honda driver had stopped at the stop sign.

Police Capt. Ed Byrnes said the Jeep driver, identified as Andra Schwab, 43, of Basking Ridge, reportedly told police that she thought she had stopped.

The  driver of the Honda was transported to the hospital with a complaint of pain. Byrnes said the report did not specify which first aid squad responded to the accident scene. No other passengers were in the car, he said.

The driver of the Jeep was issued a summons for failure to stop and yield, according to township police.

The two-way stop, which previously had only stop signs along Somerville Road, was expanded into a four-way stop in March 2012. Byrnes said he did not have a report tracking the number of accidents at the new four-way stop as of Wednesday afternoon.
