VNA Rummage Sale Highlight of Upcoming Events

Also, annual Mother's Day horseback ride at Lord Stirling Stable, free opera at the Bernards Township library.

 

With the flowers in full bloom, and this weekend a chance to show how much you appreciate your mother, this can be one of your best weeks of the year! Here are some ideas of things to do and places to go.

As usual, we have included kid-friendly ideas under the Grab & Go section.

Spring Rummage Sale for the Visiting Nurse Association of Someret Hills
Where/When: At the Far Hills Fairground off Route 202 in Far Hills, this Friday and Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Why Go: Because this is the mother of all rummage sales, nearly a century old, with thousands of donated items from furniture to frippery, fashions and lots of necessities. The sale benefits the programs and the underinsured patients for the VNA, based in Basking Ridge.
Pricing: Free admission and parking, bargain price tags

Mother's Day Horseback Ride
When/Where: 
Sunday at the Lord Stirling Park Riding Stable from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Why Go: 
Treat Mom to a relaxing walk-only ride through the beautiful trails of the stables.  The family can join her if she lets you!
Pricing: $25 for FLSS members; $30 for non-members; preregistration necessary.

Friday Night at the Opera: Massenet's Thais
When/Where: 
Friday at the Bernards Township Library at 7:30 p.m.
Why Go:
  This marvelous production will satisfy both those who are tired of the standard operatic repertory, and those who prefer not to venture too far from it.
Pricing: Free

7th Annual Car Show
When/Where: 
Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Bridgewater Township Library parking lot.
Why Go: 
Food, music, prizes and your vote counts!
Pricing: 
Free 

Opening Reception for ‘Beautiful People’ by Anne Kullaf
Where/When: From 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Gallery Egan in Morristown.
Why Go: If you’re into art, then this is the first chance to check out Kullaf’s display of urban figurative paintings.

‘I Hate Hamlet’ Play
Where/When: On Friday and Saturday at the Bickford Theatre in Morris Township.
Why Go: Because this Tony Award nominated comedy tells the story of an actor who is stuck in a rut, and is playing a role he hates: Hamlet.
Pricing: $40; $36 for senior citizens; $33 for museum members; $20 for students

Opening Night: ‘Mauritius’ by Chester Theatre Group
Where/When: At the Black River Playhouse in Chester on Friday at 8 p.m.
Why Go: Because this play stars local actors, including Jill Bormann of Morristown and Carol Holland and Steven Nitka of Long Valley.
Pricing: $18; $16 for seniors 65 and older and students

‘Beyond Therapy’ by the Chatham Community Players
Where/When: On Friday and Saturday, at 8 p.m. at Chatham Playhouse.
Why Go: Because the play is about relationships, psychology, and the unexpected effects that therapy can have on someone who is looking for romance.
Pricing: $20; $18 for people younger than 18 or 65 or older

Manhattan Comedy Night
Where/When: At 8 p.m. on Friday at the Community Theatre in Morristown.
Why Go: Because, if you’re looking for a laugh, this showcase of up and coming stand-up talent could do the trick.

GRAB & GO KIDS PLANNER

Alive at the EEC
When/Where: 
Daily through June 10 at the Lord Stirling Park, Environmental Education Center in Basking Ridge from 9 a.m. to 5 pm.
Why Go: 
Check out the bright colors of the poison dart frogs and learn about reptiles and amphibians from around the world.
Pricing:

Make Mom a Tulip Planter or a Mother's Day Vase
When/Where: 
Saturday at Home Depot and/or Lowes. Check event details to see if you are able to surprise mom with both! 
Why Go: 
A  gift for Mom made with love and your own two hands.

Celebrate May Day
When/Where: 
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville.
Why Go: 
A family festival filled with activities in to be enjoyed in the warmth of the Spring air.

Somerset 2011 Special Olympics Track and Field Event
When/Where:  
Saturday at Bridgewater-Raritan High School from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Why Go: 
Cheer on these wonderful athletes! Volunteer your support and win much more than a trophy.
Pricing:

Home-School Day at the Cooper Gristmill: Muffin Baking
Where/When: At the Cooper Gristmill in Black River County Park, Chester Township, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday.
Why Go: Because students learn how to make muffins from freshly ground flour, and will tour the gristmill while the muffins bake. Children will also decorate cloth bags, then use them to bring the muffins home.
Pricing: $6 per student

Tyke Hike

Where/When: 10 a.m. at The Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham on Saturday.
Why Go: Because children ages 2 through 6, as long as they are with an adult, can join in this hike.
Pricing: $2 per person

Free Comic Book Day
Where/When: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Dewey’s Comic City in Madison.
Why Go: Because more than 30 comics from various publishers will be available. An Archie Comics artist will also be in attendance.
Pricing: Free

Horse Drawn Wagon Ride
Where/When: From 10:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm in Morris Township on Saturday.
Why Go: Because this ride will be educational. Participants will learn about Charles Foster and his methods, crops, and equipment in the early 20th century. Pre-registration required by calling 973-326-7645.

Swampy Stories & Sing-a-long
Where/When: From 2 to 3 p.m. at The Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham on Saturday.
Why Go: Because children and adults of all ages can gather around the campfire for swamp stories and a sing-a-long.
Pricing: $3

Family Fun Walk and Run 
When/Where: 
Saturday at Duke Island Park at 9 am.
Why Go: 
Run, walk, or just come out and enjoy the day while supporting Breast Cancer programs.
Pricing: 
$15 with advanced registration; $20 on day of event; children's events are free

Mother's Day Festival 
When/Where: 
Sunday at Alba Vineyard from noon to 5 p.m.
Why Go: 
A special celebration for Mom with plenty to do for the whole family. Tell Mom you love her with a horse-drawn carriage ride through the vineyard. Kids can enjoy face painting, pony rides, moon bounce and more while Mom has some "me" time.
Pricing:  
$10 for adults 21-and-under; $5 for young adults ages 12 to 20; children free; additional fees for special activities
