You would never expect to see a painting by someone who cannot hold a brush, hear a poem written by someone who has never spoken a word, watch a dance choreographed by a person who has never walked. Yet, that is precisely what occurs at the Matheny Medical and Educational Center's Arts Access Program, where the unexpected happens everyday.
Matheny (www.matheny.org) is a special hospital and educational facility in Peapack for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Many of the artists in the Arts Access Program cannot speak and do not have control of their hands and arms. But their mind is intact, and they use unique methods, employed by the Arts Access Program, that enable them to overcome their disabilities and express themselves in multiple artistic disciplines.
Full Circle 2012: Unexpected Art, being held from 3-6 p.m., Saturday, November 3, is the annual celebration of Arts Access, a fine arts showcase featuring original work created by the Arts Access artists. Forty-five works of visual art will be on display in the gallery of the Robert Schonhorn Arts Center at Matheny, and a multi-media stage presentation will showcase choreography/dance, drama and poetry. Full Circle this year will be dedicated to the memory of former Matheny president Robert Schonhorn, who co-founded the program and brought it into prominence on a state and national level. Due to his passion and dedication, the Robert Schonhorn Arts Center is a thriving artistic haven for people with disabilities.
The visual arts exhibit will be curated by Dan Fenelon, Madison-based award-winning artist who continually gives back to the community (www.wavedog.com). His work has been shown in galleries in New York, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia and Santa Fe. He recently completed The Peace Summit Mural in Newark. Speaking about the visual arts display to be shown at Full Circle, Fenelon said, "You can expect to see the work of some very impressive artists. If I saw this show in Chelsea, I would be impressed, and it would be critically acclaimed." Most of the visual art created by Arts Access artists has traditionally been in a geometric abstract style, but some of this year's offerings, Fenelon feels, lean toward folk or urban expressionism.
