The Somerset Patriots swept a double header over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in front of 6,827 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.
Game 1: Patriots 5, Blue Crabs 1
Somerset scored first in the bottom half of the first inning. Freddie Bynum started it off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Yunesky Sanchez. Jeff Nettles then followed a batter later with an RBI double to plate Sanchez and give the Patriots a 2-0 advantage.
A solo homerun by Jesse Gutierrez (2) in the top of the second got the Blue Crabs on the board and made the score 2-1.
The Patriots added to their lead in the fourth after Johnny Drennen (6) and Yusuf Carter (10) drove back to back homeruns to make the score 4-1.
Sanchez (5) drove a solo homerun over the left field wall the following inning to give Somerset a 5-1 lead.
Patriots starter Derell McCall (6-5) got the win after allowing a run in five innings pitched. Joe Gannon (1-2) suffered the loss for Southern Maryland, allowing five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
Game 2: Patriots 3, Blue Crabs 0
An RBI double by Colin Curtis brought home Freddie Bynum for Somerset’s first run in the bottom of the third inning. A few batters later, Curtis came around to score on an error by center fielder Jeremy Owens for the 2-0 lead.
The Patriots tacked on their final run in bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Dan Hennigan to make the score 3-0.
Patriots reliever Andy Sisco (1-0) got the win after striking out one in an inning of work. Southern Maryland starter Daryl Thompson (1-0) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings pitched. Andrew Dobies came on to pitch the seventh inning and pick up his fifth save of the season.
The 2012 Somerset Patriots season will continue at home on Sunday evening when the Patriots take on the Blue Crabs at 5:05 p.m. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Patriots T-shirt courtesy.
