On Saturday, March 1, Affinity Federal Credit Union Foundation Executive Director Dr. Lauretta A. Farrell presented a check for $550 to Bill Lavin, an Elizabeth, NJ firefighter who founded The Sandy Ground Project: Where Angels Play, at the organization’s first annual Polar Bear Plunge. The Plunge took place in Sea Bright, NJ, where the first Sandy Ground playground was built.
The goal of The Sandy Ground Project is to build 26 playgrounds, most in storm-ravaged areas, each dedicated to one of the 26 victims from the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, CT. "It's where the angels that we lost will watch over the angels we still have with us," says Lavin, a Woodbridge, NJ resident. The playground in Sea Bright honors the memory of Anne Marie Murphy, the Sandy Hook teacher who died trying to save her student, Dylan Hockley, 6.

The funds presented by Dr. Farrell represented gifts from employees of Affinity Federal Credit Union who participated in a special Jeans & Jerseys Day fundraiser as part of Super Bowl XLVIII festivities. Each month, Affinity employees choose a local, grassroots charity to support by paying $5.00 each to wear jeans to work.
