Ridge dominates District 1 Fencing Championship

Earning its fourth district title in eight years, the Ridge boys’ fencing team dominated the competition at Hackettstown High School with 97 victories as they topped runner-up Mendham by 8 points by winning GOLD on Foil and Sabre and finishing SILVER in Epee.

In the girls’ competition, Ridge Girls came in fourth place overall with Epee claiming the GOLD and Foil finishing BRONZE. 

Both teams advance to the top 16 in the state. As District 1 Champions this past weekend, the Ridge Boys team will receive a top four seed in the bracket-style State Championship Tournament.

BOYS TOURNAMENT

The boys’ best weapon showing came in Foil where Bobak Shadpoor, Mark Simeon and Will Gaziano combined for a 35-1 mark.  All three qualified for the Individual State Championships with Shadpoor delivering the top performance earning the GOLD in the individual tournament.  Gaziano earned SILVER  after a fence-off against Shadpoor while Simeon took the fourth place.

The boys’ sabre surprised the team with the GOLD with Ray Comperiati, Jacob Klein, and Brennan Wu combining 30 wins. After tying with Bernards after the first round, Klein and Wu swept their opponents in a fence off for first place to claim the GOLD.  Klein later took the bronze medal in the individual tournament to qualify for the Individual State Championships.

The boys’ epee team composed of Jake Lee, Arsalan Husain and Paul Molander combined 32 wins to tie with Mendham in the first round of competition. In a fence off for first place, the squad took the SILVER medal.

All three weapons will move on to the Squad State Tournament set for Saturday, February 22 at North Hunterdon High School. Top individuals Shadpoor, Gaziano, Simeon and Klein will compete in the State Individual Tournament on Sunday, March 1 at Montgomery High School.

GIRLS TOURNAMENT

The Ridge girls’ epee team won the GOLD with a solid 33-3 performance.  All three squad members, Amy Tong, Amanda Choy and Lee Ann Choy, qualified for the Individual States Championship. In the individual tournament, Tong garnered her second consecutive GOLD medal while L. Choy earned the SILVER. A. Choy clinched the fifth place.

The girls’ foil squad took the BRONZE medal after Bernards and Mendham. With Emily Saul, Gauri Badrish, Emily Selitti, and Emily York joined forces to gain 26 victories. The girls’ sabre squad of Natalie Daukszewicz, Elinor McCarthy, Amanda Laversa, and Nicole Kuo, took eighth place.

The girls’ foil and epee squads will advance to the Squad State Championship on February 23 at North Hunterdon High School. Tong, L. Choy, and A. Choy will compete in the Individual State Championships on Sunday, March 1 at Montgomery High School.
