Parents Again Ask Why Diwali isn't a School Holiday

If the township's Indian population has risen to about 9 percent, and other groups get religious or cultural holidays off from school, two parents — echoing a subject raised last fall — wanted to know why Diwali can't be added to the school calendar in Bernards Township. School officials have said they would consider how to structure future year's school calendars. But no promises were made, and another concern is how late in June students must attend school.

Missing Jewelry Found in Bernards 'Burglary'

Exactly one week after a k-nine unit and police combed the area of South Alward Avenue looking for a believed burglar who had slipped into one of the street's homes and had taken jewelry while the owner was walking her dog, the mystery was solved. Police were informed the missing jewelry had been misplaced.

Bernardsville Man Survives Helicopter Crash that Kills Two Others

Stephen Barral was along in surviving a helicopter crash that killed a Tewksbury man, William Ellsworth, and a Connecticut man. Tragically, the helicopter was making its way through the foggy Pocono mountains on Tuesday night, and fell short of the Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport on Mount Pocono by just a mile. The crash took place on Tuesday night, but the crash scene was not located until after midnight on Wednesday, area police said.

Far Hills Races Tradition Continues for 92nd Year; Thousands Expected

If you haven't been to the Far Hills Race Meeting for a while, this could be the year — or at least go to one of the after-party parties on race day, next Saturday, Oct. 20. There's plenty of planning to do if you want to rent a big space, or just throw lunch and a bottle of wine in a picnic basket.

Ridge Traffic Task Force Planned For Officials

The Bernards Board of Education and the Township Committee agreed to set up their own task force to address the problem that won't go away — what to do to relieve traffic at the entrance to Ridge High School every school morning. Representatives from each met on Wednesday, and the decision was made to invite the public to the next meeting.
