Celebrating Purim with Style at the Chabad Jewish Center at Basking Ridge

Annual holiday event attracts celebrants from the community and beyond.

The threw a Purim party with style last Sunday with a community event commemorating a holiday that involves celebration.

The room was filled to capacity as a disc jockey kept children and adults alike on their feet. With music, games, great food (including lots of hamentashen, a Purim specialty) everyone had a great time, said Rabbi Yitzchok Moully.

Highlights included a masquerade show, hula competition, and the rabbi
jumping rope, he said. More than 150 people attended, he said later in the week.

Everyone in costume would win a prize, he said beforehand. The entire Jewish community was invited to the holiday celebration regardless of background or affiliation with the center at 3048 Valley Road, he said beforehand.

Purim is a day of sharing together in utter joy, the rabbi said. "It is a holiday on
which we exchange gifts of delicacies and drink, aid the poor andfeast on superb dishes interspersed with wine. The holiday celebrates a riveting yet true epic of palace intrigue in ancient Persia which almost resulted in the annihilation of the Jews during the reign of King Achashverosh (Xerxes). The Jews not only survived but triumphed because of their active unity and unshakable commitments to their
identity as a practicing Jewish community," he said.
