Local Somerset County Senior Centers Announce January Actvities

Everything from Chinese New Year, to jazz, ballroom dancing and learning about the Pine Barrens at centers open to all county seniors.

Each of the senior centers operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services are open to all county residents, with Warren Brook in Warren Township, and the Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge attracting mainly residents from the Somerset Hills.

All programs begin at 11 a.m. unless otherwise listed. Attendees are asked to call for lunch reservations by 10 a.m. the day before they wish to eat a meal. Call individual centers for more information.

Centers generally are open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Living Well Yoga – Seated yoga class, Wednesdays, 12:30-1:30 p.m. (Jan. 8-Feb 26) Advance registration required.

Pool Sharks – Pool Table Available Daily, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Call for availability)

Stretch & Flex Class – (Upper & Lower Body Chair Exercise), Every Monday and Thursday, 10:45 am **Please check monthly calendar for schedule updates**

Tai Chi – Monday, 1 to 2 p.m.  (6 week session: Nov. 4 – Dec. 16) Advanced registration required.

Zumba – Wednesdays & Fridays, 9:30 a.m. (Jan 8 – Feb. 28) Advanced registration required.

January 3 – “The Pine Barrens of New Jersey” by Dr. Angus Gillespie, Professor at Rutgers University, 10:30 a.m. This program is funded by the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

January 7 – “Birthday Milestones” by Helen Vasko, 10:30 a.m. (Helen Vasko leads this discussion on birthdays and what has made them so special for you over the years.  What do you like to do to celebrate?)

January 7 – Free Blood Pressure Screenings with Laura Cummings, RN, BSN, Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills, 10:30 a.m.

January 8 – “Just a Touch: A Lesson About Nerve Damage” by the American Diabetes Association, 10:30 a.m. (The American Diabetes Association will discuss the effect that diabetes has on the nerves in our bodies and ways to prevent the pain from disrupting daily life.)

January 10 – “Fall Prevention” by Patti Muscolino, Way to Be Safe Organization, 10:30 am

January 14 – Ball Room Dance for Beginners with Simone Coonrad, 10:30 a.m. Arts Horizons presents Simone Coonrad, who will teach the basics of ballroom dance to beginners and will perfect the steps of the more advanced dancer.  This program is funded by the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey.

January 15 – Winter Floral Arranging Workshop with the Bernardsville Garden Club, 10:30 am (Members of the Bernardsville Garden Club will conduct an informative and interactive flower arranging workshop.  Seating is limited and reservations are required.)

January 17 & 28 – Bingo, 10:30 am (Try your luck and win great prizes!)

January 20 – Center closed

January 22 – Musical Entertainment with Josie Mescallado, Home Instead Senior Care, 10:30 a.m. (Josie will entertain and sing favorites from the past few decades.)

January 24 – “Get Your Fiber the Healthy Way” by Kaitlyn McGowan, RD, 10:30 a.m. (Kaitlyn McGowan will return to discuss healthy fibrous foods and offer delicious samples.)

January 29 – Total Brain Workout: Visual Thinking, 10:30 a.m.  These puzzles are designed to help hone your visual logic and problem solving skills.)

January 29 – January Birthday Celebrations, 12:15 p.m.

January 31 – Celebrate the Chinese New Year, 10:30 a.m. (We are excited to celebrate the holiday by learning about the Chinese Zodiac followed by a special Chinese menu.)

January 3, 10, 17 & 24 – Brains and Games with Adrienne/Hand Bell Ringer Practice, 10:30 a.m.

January 6 – “The Power of Positivity” by Betty Epple, 10:30 am (Betty Epple is a club mentor in Toastmasters International.  She will present a program on positivity which is a powerful state of mind.  It can enhance your relationships, improve your health, relieve depression and broaden your mind.  Join us as we start the New Year on a positive note.)

January 13 – “Controlling Bed Bugs” by Lynne Gregory, Coordinator, Pesticides Community Outreach, United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region 2, 10:30 am (The most important step in controlling bed bugs is to learn about them and prevent them from being introduced.  This program will highlight the prevention, detection and control of bed bugs, which are parasites that seek out sleeping people and animals. Non-chemical and chemical intervention methods will also be discussed.)

January 15 – “Unused Medication Drop-Off Opportunity” with Officer Thomas Wallace, Somerset County Sheriff’s Department, 9:30 to 10:30 am (Officer Wallace will be at the center to collect any unused or expired medications.  Please take advantage of this safe way to dispose of your medications.  Center staff cannot accept unused medication without the Sheriff’s Officer being present.)

January 20 – Center closed

January 27 – “The History of Jazz Through Song” with Gordon James, 10:30 a.m. (Trumpeter, Flugelhornist, and Vocalist, Gordon James, will take you on a journey through the different eras of jazz with words and song.  This lecture/performance will cover the origins of jazz music: Ragtime, Blues, Dixieland Jazz, the Big Band Era including big band singers, Cool Jazz and Smooth Jazz.  Some of the artists discussed and performed will be Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Glen Miller, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis and David Brubeck. This is a must see program for both jazz novices and jazz lovers.)

January 31 – Brains and Games and Chinese New Year Fun, 10:30 a.m.
