Mayor Schedules Two 'Brown Bag' Lunches With Residents

Malay said he will continue tradition of informal chats with township residents.

Bernards Township Mayor John Malay has scheduled two “brown bag” lunches where residents are invited to bring their own lunches for an informal discussion about issues affecting the township, the township announced. Two Saturday lunches—so far—have been scheduled for March 19 and June 11.

The lunches are a way to "find out what's on people's minds," Malay said on Tuesday.

"It's a way to have a more informal interaction with the residents that (for them) to get up at public comment during a regular meeting," the mayor said.

Malay said he is continuing the series of lunches with residents that was started last year  by then-mayor Scott Spitzer.

The first lunch is scheduled to be held between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on March 19 in the first-floor conference room on at

The second is scheduled for the same time on June 11 at 8000 Fellowship Road, in the Fellowship Dining Hall.

"Holding the lunch on Saturday should help some residents provide input, who might otherwise might not be able to,” Malay said.

Malay said he isn't sure what topics and concerns will be raised by residents. "I am sure I will hear about taxes." He said many of the current issues involve the local school system, although the township is a separate entity from the Board of Education.

He said the lunches are an opportunity for residents to approach him with "comments and questions."
