New Somerset Hills Director Coming from Sussex Y

David M. Carcieri will replace Robert Lomauro, who has held the position for 18 years.

The Board of Directors announces the appointment of David M. Carcieri as the organization’s new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective August 20. He will replace in September.

Carcieri, executive director of the Sussex County YMCA since 2006, brings more than 25 years of leadership experience in both the for-profit and non-profit sector, the announcement said.

A resident of Hamburg in Sussex County, Carcieri’s 16-year career with the YMCA organization began at the YMCA of Greater Providence in 1996. He served in various roles during his 10 years at Greater Providence. He was promoted to Senior Program Director when the Association opened its new branch, the West Bay Family YMCA in 2001, where he soon assumed the role of Associate Executive Director.

In 2006, Carcieri was selected as the new Executive Director of the Sussex County YMCA, the announcement said. The Sussex County YMCA is a branch of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, the largest YMCA in the state of New Jersey, serving over 164,000 members and program participants annually.

During his tenure as the Executive Director at the Sussex County YMCA from 2006 to 2011, Carcieri grew the branch’s revenue by 52 percent, according to information from the Somerset Hills YMCA. He increased contributions to the annual support campaign by 370 percent during this time.  He also expanded membership units over 34 percent.

Tad Waldbauer, Chair of the Board of the Somerset Hill YMCA said Carcieri is a dedicated YMCA professional with demonstrated expertise in building strong staff and volunteer teams, fundraising, and membership and program innovation. "His community collaborations with the local hospital, other non-profit organizations and local government agencies have advanced the Y’s mission and established the Sussex County YMCA as a leading cause-driven organization."

After a search that began at the beginning of this year, "We look forward to David’s leadership,” Waldbauer said.

Lomauro announced in January that he would retire following 18 years in the Somerset Hills' chief leadership position. The Board of Directors of the YMCA then reportedly formed a CEO Search Committee that is working with the assistance of the YMCA of the USA to conduct a national search for a replacement, according to an announcement from the YMCA on Monday. A YMCA news release at that time said it was expected the name of a potential new CEO would be recommended to the Board of Directors by the middle of this year.

“I am excited to become part of the Somerset Hills YMCA and join a community that embraces the Y and supports its efforts to strengthen the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility,” Carcieri said in the statement released by the Somerset Hills YMCA. “The Somerset Hills YMCA has a stellar reputation as a cause-driven organization with committed staff and volunteers, and I look forward to the opportunity to serve the Somerset Hills community.”

Carcieri will lead a team of approximately 450 employees and engage over 100 policy volunteers who serve over 20,000 individuals in the Somerset Hills area.

Lomauro has presided over the 20,000-member regional YMCA through a major expansion of its main facility at 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge; the opening of the Riverwalk satellite off Martinsville Road, also in in Basking Ridge, but near the Warren border; and the establishment of the Melissa Riggio group home for disabled adults on the main property in 2011. The Melissa Riggio home, designed to link its residents with the facilities and programs at the Y, was the first of its kind at any YMCA in the nation.

Lomauro has has served in some sort of capacity as a professional director with YMCAs in New Jersey for 39 years, said Andrea Williams, director of public relations for the Somerset Hills YMCA. Lomauro, a resident of Clinton Township, began his career at the YMCA as director of operations for the Passaic-Clifton-Garfield YMCA in 1972, she said.

According to the Somerset Hills YMCA, Carcieri made an immediate impact in Sussex County after joining that staff and was recognized by the association as the Staff Member of the Year for 2006. He was awarded the Branch of the Year in 2009, 2010, and 2011 for the Metro YMCA of the Oranges.

In 2011 the association promoted Carcieri to Senior Executive Director and expanded his responsibilities to include leading the organizational change process of transferring the YM-YWHA of North Jersey to become the Wayne YMCA, the newest branch of the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges. Both full facility Ys under David’s leadership have a combined budget of $8M and collectively have over 13,000 members and 300 employees. To date David has raised over $340,000 in contributions to the 2012 annual campaign.

Carcieri also has been at the forefront of leading a number of YMCA of the USA initiatives, according to the Somerset Hills YMCA. In 2008, the Sussex County YMCA, under the leadership of David, was selected as one of 18 YMCA’s nationally to lead the Pioneering Healthier Communities Initiative.  Pioneering Healthier Communities (PHC) is a Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) supported and funded initiative. The Sussex County YMCA has served as the convener in bringing together the county’s strongest leaders and channeling their focus on policy and environment changes in the community.

Carcieri is an active member of the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce and serves as its Treasurer, according to the Somereset Hills YMCA. He is also a member of several YMCA professional organizations including the North American YMCA Development Organization.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Rhode Island and has undertaken graduate studies in Exercise Physiology from both Northeastern University and University of Rhode Island, the YMCA release said.

David will be relocating to the Somerset Hills area, according to the announcement.
