November's Special Events at Senior Center

Information and fun recognizes November's holidays and other events.

A pumpkin pie "smoothie" tasting, a presentation on services available to veterans and other special programs related to health and the season's observances are on the November calendar for the in Basking Ridge. A local Girl Scout troop also is expected to visit during the month.

The center, which serves residents of Bernardsville, Basking Ridge and the rest of the Somerset Hills, one of the senior facilities operated by the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services.

Please call for lunch reservations by 11 a.m. the day before you wish to come. For more information, contact the center or other centers throughout Somerset County operated by the Office on Aging.

The Somerset County Senior Wellness Center is at 202 Mount Airy Road, 908-204-3435 Regular hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Along with regular activities, below are the special programs scheduled for the month.

Nov. 1 — “Food Shopping” Take a walk down memory lane with Helen Vasko to  discuss the many changes in our food markets over the years.

Nov. 2 — “Hearing Aid Clinic”  Conducted by Farah Said, A.u.D. who will inspect and clean your hearing aids.

Nov. 2 — “Pumpkin Pie Smoothie Tasting  At 11 a.m., sample a seasonal favorite with this delicious healthy treat while we test ourselves on all the health benefits of pumpkins.

Nov. 8 — Center closed in observance of Election Day.

Nov. 9 — “Veterans Services Presentation”  Conducted by Peter Niemec of the Somerset County Department of Veterans Affairs who will discuss various services available to all veterans.

Nov. 10 — “Girl Scout Troop visit”  A local girl scout troop pays a visit today to observe the wonderful benefits of our “Senior Flex” exercise class.

Nov. 11 — Center closed in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Nov. 15 — “Maple Sugaring Program & Pancake Brunch”  Somerset County Parks Commission will teach us all about the process of tapping trees for the maple sap. Afterwards we will enjoy pumpkin & plain pancakes with samples of different maple syrups.

Nov. 16 — “Lifeline Screening” From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., this is a preventive health screening event that can identify stroke and vascular risk factors. Call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners to schedule your appointment.

Nov. 18 — “Pet Therapy” Bonnie Charkowick visits the center with her therapy dogs.

Nov. 22 — “Art of the Masters: Gustav Klimt”  Creative Notions brings this lecture and workshop to the center to discover and re-create art in mixed media, with a limit of 16 participants. Funding has been made possible, in part, by a grant from the N.J. State Council on the Arts/Dept of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, through funds administered by the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Commission through the State/County Partnership Local Arts Program.

Nov. 24-25 —Center Closed in observance of Thanksgiving Day.

Nov. 29 — “How to Fight Fatigue Lunch & Learn”  At 11:30 a.m., Dr. Vince Sferra of Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation lectures on a tired society and what can be done to increase energy.

Nov. 30 – “Mind Your Mind: Perception” This is the fifth of nine classes. This session will discuss the process of acquiring and converting information through our senses.

Nov. 30 — “Birthday Celebration” At 12:15 p.m., celebrate November birthdays.
