Somerset Hills YMCA Introduces New Beginner Fitness Program

Program offers one-on-one fitness training in a welcoming, more private fitness room

Press release:

For adults who are interested in including fitness in their lives and establishing good exercise behaviors, the Somerset Hills YMCA introduces a new wellness program to help them reach their goals. The newly developed Beginner Fitness (B. Fit) Program at the Mount Airy branch offers a small and welcoming fitness space designed to help participants feel comfortable and supported on their journey to a healthier lifestyle.

“Leading a healthy life is core to the mission of the Y and we want to ensure that everyone has that opportunity,” said Susan Visser, Director of Strategic Projects and Initiatives for the Somerset Hills YMCA. “We have learned that, for some, our wellness center can be a bit intimidating. This program offers a supportive environment to get people started on the right foot, minimize the apathy that is often associated with beginning a fitness routine, and make sure they are exercising safely using proper techniques.”

The B. Fit Program provides structure and accountability to help individuals learn how to overcome the personal barriers that prevent them from exercising regularly. Free to members of the Somerset Hills YMCA, the 12-week B. Fit Program is designed to provide participants with one-on-one attention from Wellness Coaches to create a fitness routine that works for each individual. The Wellness Coaches ensure that participants are educated in the proper use of the fitness equipment and that they exercise safely. Additionally, the B. Fit staff encourages accountability among participants to schedule 2 to 3 sessions per week. At the end of the 12-week program, the B. Fit staff introduces participants to the main Wellness Center and demonstrates how to use the fitness equipment so they can continue their healthy lifestyles.

“This program helped me completely change the way I view exercise. I used to consider it a chore, and now I really enjoy it,” commented Beverley Perks, B. Fit participant. “The staff is so supportive. They hold you accountable for coming, monitor what you are doing, and guide your progress. It has made such a difference in my life…I dropped two dress sizes, I sleep better, I eat healthier and I have more energy to care for my children.”
