Escape to a Watercolor World — and Bring Your Paintbrushes!

Somerset County's Buck Garden is offering one-day watercolor class with internationally noted artist.

Sometimes it seems as if there just aren't enough hours to go around. But each week, Patch will let you know about something to do to relax with friends, family — or just to take some time for yourself.

This week, it's time to grab your beret and paintbrushes, and to experience the joy of being a nature artist creating beauty from life in an outdoor setting — perhaps the exact opposite of being stuck in the office or cleaning your kitchen! But pre-registration is required.

The Leonard J. Buck Garden, part of the Somerset County Park Commission, has scheduled a full one-day class, “Watercolors in the Garden” for 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The session will take place outdoors at the garden at 11 Layton Road in Far Hills, not far from the border of Bernards Township. Internationally known nature and wildlife artist Beatrice Bork of Flemington will provide instruction on capturing Buck Garden’s beauty on paper.

According to the park commission, students will be guided in choosing a location when painting outdoors, paint application, mixing colors, composition, and how to create a finished watercolor painting. Basic drawing skills are recommended.

The fee is $35 per person. Preregistration is required by calling Leonard J. Buck Garden at 908-234-2677, ext. 21 or NJ Relay 711 for individuals with a hearing or speech impairment.

Rain date

Since instruction will take place outdors, a rain date is set for Friday, Oct. 18.

Leonard J. Buck Garden is considered one of the premier rock gardens in the eastern United States, consisting of a series of alpine and woodland garden areas situated in a 29-acre wooded stream valley, according to the park commission.

Tucked among the rocks and boulders are rare and exotic rock garden plants. The wooded trails connecting the outcroppings are lined with wildflowers that have flourished and multiplied through the years. Throughout the garden grow various trees, shrubs, and perennials.
