"Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," to be Presented This Saturday at Harry Dunham Park

Free movie, hot dogs and popcorn to be presented by the Bernards Township Democratic Committee.

The Bernards Township Democratic Committee is inviting residents to enjoy a free showing of the classic movie, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4, at Harry Dunham Park at 490 Somerville Road, at the intersection with Church Street and Liberty Corner Road in Liberty Corner.

The committee also will provide free hot dogs and beverages at 6:30 p.m., with the movie and popcorn to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Families should bring lawn chairs and blankets. After the movie there will be a general discussion, according to the committee. The event will end by 9:30 p.m.

"This is the first of many community events that we will be presenting for the residents of the township," said Emily Benjamin, vice chairwoman of the committee. A family movie for this event was chosen after a ballot of residents taken at Charter Day in May.

The  1939 movie, "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington," was directed by award-winning film director Frank Capra, and won an Academy award for the best original story. The evening's organizer's said the Library of Congress added the movie to the U.S. National Film Registry, for being, "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant."
