Spooky Tales and Art at the Farmstead Arts

Artist will tell Halloween tales to children and adults, as well as encouraging them to create art at Oct. 30 event.

"Spooky Stories and Art," with master storyteller Linda Howe is scheduled to be presented for all ages at the in the historic farmhouse the day before Halloween, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Everyone ages three and older is encouraged to wear a costume to listen to the tales and also create Howe's own "Touch Drawing" during the event.

Howe's techniques and her storytelling specialties are described on her website. Her information says she presents tales and myths from cultures around the world.

Howe describes Touch Drawing as “a beautiful, intuitive, expressive, hands-on process that integrates storytelling and engages the audience to draw out themselves and their own stories." She said the technique is similar to finger painting, but without the mess and with a more beautiful result. "It is an art that everyone can do and enjoy."

Cost is $10 per person and $5 for children under 5, and seniors citizens. Those who wish to attend can register online, or send a check, payable to Friends of the KMS Farmstead, to Farmstead Arts, P.O., box 155, Basking Ridge, with a note including your email, address and phone, and the number and type of tickets you are requesting. Tickets will be sold at the door, based on availability. A maximum of 45 tickets will be sold.

Howe, who is from New Providence, has more than 30 years experience of storytelling, writing, and creating art in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, according to information from the Farmstead Arts.

In New Jersey, she has participated in storytelling at the Great Swamp Halloween event, the Chatham and Warren school districts, the Early Crafts and Trade Museum in Madison, and at the Chatham and Montclair libraries, as well as, a variety of camps in the Northeast.

Howe is on the faculty at the Yard School at Montclair Museum where she teaches studio courses and the intuitive print-making drawing process she calls Touch Drawing.

In addition, she is a writer, poet, and certified teacher who also enjoys working with seniors at senior centers, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities performing and conducting courses on drawing out the stories of their lives.
