The Show Goes On: Spamalot Shows Continue Even With a Little Rain

Three more shows next week following Saturday's well-attended performance

The grass may have been soggy and skies misting, but the second staging of Trilogy Repertory Co.'s "Spamalot" played to a full house outdoors at Pleasant Valley Park on Saturday evening.

Additional free productions of Monty Python’s musical comedy are scheduled to continue at 8 p.m. next Thursday Friday and Saturday, July 18, 19 and 20, at Pleasant Valley Park in Basking Ridge.

The production debuted on Thursday night and was called off due to rain on Friday, but Trilogy and the Bernards Township Parks and Recreation Department, which presents the “Plays in the Park” series each summer, took a bet on Saturday night. The performance drew a crowd of a few hundred.

The Rogers family of Bedminster, including Bob, Jake and Jackie, came fully prepared not only with lawn chairs — typical for seating in the outdoor amphitheater — but also showed up with a carpet of plastic on which to sit.

The plastic was "just in case" the ground was too muddy, said Jackie Rogers, who acknowledged it could also serve as a roof in case of heavier rain. "We are dedicated," she said of her family's enthusiasm for coming to Trilogy's annual performances.

Al LiCata of Basking Ridge and his daughter Ainsley also were prepared with an umbrella and bug spray, as well as snacks. "We are seasoned veterans" of the Plays in Park series, he said.

Trilogy will continue the season with a second production starting August 1 with Shakespeare’s drama “King Lear,” in partnership with Westfield’s Troupe of Friends.

Donations are accepted for the plays, which typically draw a large regional crowd.
