What Are Some Interesting Historic Sites in Basking Ridge?

What is the most "revered" historic location in Basking Ridge? Hint: It's been around longer than the township and will be in full view on Charter Day.

In this week's You Said It, local residents and historians point out some of their favorite historic locations around Basking Ridge (Bernards Township.) And they have plenty to chose!

On Monday, township resident Paula Axt, a member of The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills, talks about the , located at 15 W. Oak Street in downtown Basking Ridge. 

Axt was speaking in the main hall of the Brick Academy during the video, following a tea last Sunday to honor longtime township historian June Kennedy, who retired at the end of 2010. The museum also will be open on Charter Day next Saturday, May 21.

On Tuesday, township resident Marcella Miccolis, chairwoman of The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills, invited the public to the "Gardens of the Historic Somerset Hills," in which she said some of the homes on the tour will be historic. The tour, hosted by the society and the Basking Ridge Garden Club will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 pm. on Friday, June 17.

Tickets are $30, and information is available by calling 908-647-2844, or by email. Tickets are available through June 1.

On Wednesday, June Kennedy of Basking Ridge, retired township historian and a trustee for The Historical Society of the Somerset Hills, points out some of the historic locations around the township. The scenes are illustrated in paintings by her husband, Robert Kennedy, hung in the Kennedy home.

On Thursday, June Kennedy talks about the signs throughout Bernards Township that locate historic sites, and points out some of the places they can be seen (and why they're there).

On Friday, she talks about the township's most historic site in downtown Basking Ridge, perhaps the most familiar scene for which Bernards Township is known.
