Breakfast Anyone? Millington Station Cafe Helps Get Your Morning On Track

For a casual breakfast or lunch - dine inside or out.

On a crisp Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m., this little cafe, located in the Millington Train Station, was hopping. Toddlers in high chairs entertained parents and grandparents, and couples skimmed their Sunday papers as they waited for their omelettes and pancakes.

With only 10 or 12 tables, the ambience is cozy. Wood tables and chairs, wood floors, framed old photos of decades gone by and assorted railroad memorabilia give the Millington Station Cafe a homey feel. There's nothing fancy here, just friendly service and generous servings of eggs, breakfast sandwiches, hash browns and french toast. It's obvious to see why this would be a "regular" breakfast or lunch place for many in the area.

The Millington Station is a working train station on the Gladstone Branch of the Morris and Essex line. Built in 1901, it was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.  Because of it's historic significance, the owners are prohibited from making structural changes. This only adds to its charm.

The cafe is opened daily for breakfast and lunch. On weekends, high school students serve customers and service is as prompt or unhurried as you desire. The breakfast menu is diner-like offering the usual array of breakfast platters, eggs any way you like them, pancakes (with whipped cream and fresh fruit), french toast and their famous McSpiro egg sandwiches.

The McSpiro's do deserve mention as they are one of the cafe's 'signature' items and undoubtedly a popular choice for morning commuters. A McSpiro is the perfect little breakfast package priced at a reasonable $3.95. There are a half dozen varieties depending on your choice or either bacon, sausage, canadian bacon or taylor ham. It must be the rolls that make them so different from breakfast sandwiches elsewhere. A bit of sweetness perhaps?

Whatever the "secret ingredient," a McSpiro's is a convenient and not overly filling way to start out the work day.  A weekend day, however, often calls for a more substantial meal. After all, you may be doing brunch -  putting breakfast and lunch together in one meal.

On this particular Sunday that was our goal. We were hoping the weather would be warm enough to eat outside. Breakfast al fresco is always a treat since everything  tastes better outdoors. The Millington Station Cafe does offer plenty of outside seating so keep it on your list for the warmer weather. They even have several tables in the shade - ideal for a casual summer lunch.

From the 12 breakfast specials at the beginning of the menu we chose a Farmers omelette (with onions, mushrooms, peppers, and bacon - and I requested cheese, $6.95) and the Florentine omelette (spinach and feta cheese, $6.95). Both were delicious and accompanied by properly done hash brown potatoes and our choice of toast.

The coffee was exceptional. Moreover, it was served in those Greek themed blue paper cups synonymous with diners and coffee vendors in NYC. How fitting, the Millington Station Cafe, a country cafe with a diner twist.
