Coming Home, to Start a Business

Owner of new Hibernate Bedding Sleep Boutique grew up in Bernards Township, preparing for grand opening of store in Bernardsville.

Scott Paladini, who is preparing to hold the grand opening for his Hibernate Bedding Sleep Boutique on Route 202 in Bernardsville this Saturday, is starting a new business — but he's certainly not new to the business.

Paladini, who grew up in the Far Hills section of Bernards Township and graduated from Ridge High School in 1998, comes from a family that has been running 15 mattress stores in multiple locations for 25 years, he said.

But Paladini said new boutique shop is taking the concept of bedding a few steps further — "It's not like Sleepy's," he said, referring to the chain mattress store.

Instead, Hibernate Bedding is stocked with OMI organic mattresses and bedding, along with antique pieces for the bedroom, art created by local artists, a variety of comforters, sheets, throws and candles, and also popular mattress brands such as Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster and Sealy Posturepedic. He said adjustable beds are becoming more popular.

Want a pillow, and a bit fussy? Hibernate bedding offers organic pillows, down pillows, memory foam pillows, pillows that cradle the neck, and wool and buckwheat pillows. (Paladini said that wool is a natural fire retardant that avoids the need for chemical spray retardants in mattresses and other bedding.)

He said the shop sells top-of-the-line bedding, but also basic mattresses selling for about $500 for a queen size. Prices include free delivery anywhere within New Jersey, and free disposal of the old mattress, he said.

Along with providing an interesting array of bedding to browse, Paladini, who now lives in Hoboken, said his goal was to open a "local" store near his hometown. Hibernate Bedding is right at the border of Bernardsville and Bernards Township, next to Monterey Gourmet.

"Hibernate Bedding also firmly believes in being an active community member and promoting the 'shop local' philosophy," Paladini said in a brochure describing the new business. "We donate to local charities, partner with small businesses to support in the growth of the local economy and dedicate time and resources to community involvement.

Basking Ridge artists showcased

Most of the paintings in the showroom, both upstairs and downstairs, are the work of Basking Ridge artist Alex Bigatti, he said. A few other framed pieces of digital photography are from Lorraine Regan, also from Basking Ridge, he said.

Hibernate Bedding already has been open for about two months, said Paladini, who founded the business with his soon-to-be-wife, Anna.

Grand opening celebration noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday

Saturday's grand opening will be held from noon to 6 p.m., and will feature refreshments, sales, raffles and giveaways, he said.

The phone number for the new store is 908-766-5450. Hibernate Bedding already is selling through a website, www.HibernateBedding.com, Paladini said.
