Dining at Rolf's is 'Wunderbar'

Classic Warren Township restaurant and lounge has many fans.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, our Somerset County Patch sites pick a great restaurant either in our town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Rolf's, Warren Township

Some places offer traditional American cuisine, some specialize in other flavors; some restaurants offer an active nightlife — Rolf's has it all.

A staple of Warren's restaurant scene, Rolf's offers American classics like burgers (including a turkey burger), ribs and filet mignon, as well as pizzas, quesadillas and fish and chips.

They're all great, to be sure, but what really draws people to Rolf's is the German fare—Wienerschnitzel, goulash and sauerbraten, and more. For appetizers, try the Kartoffelpuffer (a potato and onion pancake served with freshly-made, cinnamony apple sauce) or get a side order of Potato Roesti (a delicious kind of hash brown kind of potato) or Spaetzle (noodles).

I stopped in for lunch and ordered the Kartoffelpuffer, pan-fried pierogies, a side dish of spaetzle...and a turkey BLT sandwich on wheat bread with salad (with the sandwiches, you get your choice of fries or salad—thank you, Rolf!). Admittedly, no one person would actually order all that unless they're trying to make a Berlin buffet, and I had no plans to eat it all in one setting.

But it was hard to stop once I tasted the pierogi, served up on a bed of sweet sauerkraut and sauteed onions. The pierogi were a bit crispy where they'd been seared on the bottoms, but had a lighter taste than most others I've had.

My new-found favorite, though, was the Kartoffelpuffer—which was delicious, with a slight sweetness that was enhanced by the homemade apple sauce.

And the turkey BLT was a great sandwich—a triple-decker with lots of lettuce and tomato and really great tasting turkey bacon. The side salad included spinach and mixed greens, and best of all, cucumber slices and pickles!

Rolf's lounge is a popular night spot, with live music on the weekends, so if you're looking for a true night out, it's the place you'll want to go.

And if you have a large party with lots of different tastes, Rolf's is where you'll want to go—there may be places with menus as eclectic as Rolf's but we'd bet they can't do half of it as well.
