EVENTS: Pancakes on Sunday, Dog Adoption Day

Ridge FACTOR talent show Friday, Easter Carnival and Paws for Reading on Saturday.

With spring gaining momentum, people and organizations are coming out of the woodwork with a variety of activities for all ages and interests in the coming days.

A discussion on school pressures is scheduled for Thursday night, while other activities for, or about, young people include this Saturday's Easter Carnival at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church and "Paws for Reading" at the Bernards Township Library. The "Big Apple Circus" also is in town.

And after your St. Patrick's party on Saturday night, you might want to pick up some coffee at the fundraising Basking Ridge Fire Co. and First Aid Squad's pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. Bon appetit!

Ridge FACTOR Talent Show
When/Where:
7 p.m. on Friday at the Performing Arts Center at Ridge High School, 268 S. Finley Ave., Basking Ridge
Why Go:
Freshmen through senior students get to show off talents in music, singing more. Discover the talent in your school and community.
Cost:
$7 at the door

Easter Carnival
When/Where: From 10 a.m. to noon, on Saturday, in the center court at the 45 Church St., in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township.
Why Go: Prepare for Easter in a joyous manner with your children, when the church, Junior Women's Club of Somerset Hills and the Children's Corner invite your family to an Easter Carnival with games, crafts, food, face painting, a magic show and more. Proceeds benefit the Valerie Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support for the comprehensive healthcare of children with cancer and blood disorders.
Cost: $5 per child or $15 per family and is payable at the door. Please register here.

From 'Race to Nowhere' to Race to Somewhere
When/Where: At 7 p.m. on Thursday night at Performing Arts Center, 268 S. Finley Ave., Basking Ridge.
Why Go: To hear Rutgers professor and psychologist Dr. Maurice Elias talk about preparing and educating children, while considering a life of balance. The discussion is a follow up to the showing of the movie "Race to Nowhere" about pressures on students in highly successful school districts.
Cost: Free

Paws for Reading Ages 6 & Up
When/Where: From 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the 32 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge.
Why Go: Bring your favorite book to read for 10 minutes to a therapy dog from St. Hubert's. Children should be at least 6 years old to register.
Cost: Free, but registration is required, and can be done online.

Basking Ridge Fire Co. Pancake Breakfast
When/Where:
On Sunday, March 18, between 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Basking Ridge Firehouse, 30 Washington Ave.
Why Go: Have a hearty breakfast on the day after your St. Patrick's party, meet friends and benefit the Basking Ridge Fire Co. and the First Aid Squad.
Cost: $7 for adults, $5 for children and senior citizens, children under 3 are free.

Free Spanish Class
When/Where:
Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at in downtown Basking Ridge.
Why Go: Sample Spanish class for children offered by "Salta! Jump into Spanish."
Cost: Free, to reserve spot for your child, call 908 696-1120.

Walk on the Wild Side at Duke Farms
When/Where: Friday at 6 a.m. at Duke Farms on Route 206 in Hillsborough.
Why Go: To explore nature through a 1.25-mile trail and look at some of the landscape created by J.B. Duke.
Cost: Free.

Big Apple Circus
When/Where: Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at , Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Why Go: To see the circus's "Dream Big" show, complete with acrobats, trapeze flyers, a juggler and much more.
Cost: $20.

Daisy Cheer
When/Where: Saturday at 6 a.m. at  on Milltown Road.
Why Go: To have the chance for kindergarten and first graders to work with Evolution USASF certified cheer and tumble coaches to get their cheerleading patch, learning tumbling, cheering and much more.
Cost: $20.

BRHS Guard Show
When/Where: Saturday at 4 p.m. at the .
Why Go: To watch guard shows from eight high schools and see the BRHS 2012 show, “Reflecting Black," based on the Black Swan.
Cost: Free.

American Repertory Ballet Presents Spring Into Love
When/Where: Saturday at 4 p.m. at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg.
Why Go: To enjoy a wonderful production of the American Repertory Ballet's most romantic productions, as well as a sneak peak of an upcoming production.
Cost: $25.

Brownie Water Fun Badge
When/Where:
Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Bridgewater YMCA on Garretson Road.
Why Go: To join Girl Scouts in grades kindergarten through third as they earn the council's Water Fun Try-It through pool games and much more.
Cost: $18.

Dog Adoption Day at Bridgewater PetSmart
When/Where:
Sunday at 11 a.m. at the PetSmart on Promenade Boulevard in Bridgewater.
Why Go: To get your next best friend through a pet adoption day with People for Animals at the PetSmart
Cost: Free.


When/Where: Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m. at Mayo Performing Arts Center, Morristown
Why Go: You want to celebrate the actual St. Pat's Day with music, song and dance.
