Tastings: National Donut Day

Bernards has three Dunkin' Donuts that are participating in 'holiday' by giving out free donuts with beverage purchase.

It seems like there is a special day for just about everything these days and the donut is no exception.

National Donut Day is Friday and in honor of their big day, donut shops across the nation — including the Dunkin' Donuts in Bernards Township — have specials on donuts.

For a free Dunkin' Donuts donut, you'll need to purchase a beverage (hot or cold), according to their "Behind the Beans" blog. The chain officially says that they'll hand out one free donut of your choice "while supplies last." (Could Dunkin' Donuts ever really run out of donuts?)

As of late morning, Trupti Dave at the in The Hills said the shop had handed out about four times as many donuts as usual — but there were still plenty left.

The bakery manager Lori Koenig at the supermarket at Dewy Meadows Village off King George Road said that there seemed to be somewhat fewer of the bakery shop's fresh-baked donuts than usual left in late morning.

Neither the A&P norin the Lyons Mall had specials on donuts for the big holiday, however.

, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, is offering a sweet deal: All you have to do is show up, no purchase necessary, for a free donut of your choice (one per customer). Locals may have to trek to someplace like Bricktown or Manhattan to cash in the deal, however, so it may not be worth transportation costs.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free donuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's donuts can be found at area grocery stores.

For those whose sweet tooths don't crave donuts, however, you can always find muffins, Danish & cakes on weekdays at specialty bakery in Liberty Corner.

But if you missed your donut on Friday, The Gourmet Touch sometimes serves donuts on weekends, an employee said.
