Flag Day Run Registration Still Open on Thursday Evening

Rained-out event to be held on Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Somerset Hills YMCA's 12th annual Flag Day 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk, a fundraiser for a program to assist homeless veterans that was rescheduled from last week, is set to go on at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Race pick-up begins at 6 p.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA's main facility at 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge.

Registration also may be made on race day for $30 per runner. Other donations may be made to the program at that time as well.

Hundreds of runners already were signed up for the fundraising USATF-certified 5K. Registration for the walk is $10.

Proceeds from the Flag Day 5K Run supports Valley Brook Village, housing for homeless veterans now under construction at the Lyons campus of the Veterans Administration New Jersey Health Care facility off Valley Road in Basking Ridge.

Community Hope of Parsippany, a non-profit organization in Parsippany, is sponsoring that project and also organizes the 95-bed Hope for Veterans Transitional Housing Program, also located at the Lyons veterans administration facility.

Funds raised "help our troubled and injured veterans rebuild their lives and have a place to call home," Community Hope says on the organization's website.

Those who registered ahead received a personal fundraising page so friends and family can provide sponsorships.
