Halloween Season Celebrated in Many Upcoming Events

Halloween dance, outdoor Halloween activities, more.

This weekend is filled with Halloween events, 5K runs and lots to learn — even a chance to prep for that upcoming SAT by taking a free practice test at the Bernards Township Library.

Below is the combination of our weekly pick of upcoming activities, offering both fun weekend activities and great family-friendly fun at the same time.

Tween Halloween Origami for Grades 4 to 6
When/Where: Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the 32 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge.
Why Go:
Local resident Jann Slapin wiill extol her knowledge and expertise on the art of origami. Come learn this fun art of folding paper.
Cost:
Free, registration required. This and other events are online at Bernards Township Library website.

By the Light of the Moon
When/Where: Friday 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Somerset County Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge, for ages 7 and older with an adult.
Why Go:
With an EEC's naturalist, adventurers will explore the Great Swamp while listening for animal sounds and using their night vision to walk the swampy trails beneath the stars. Walks will depart every 15 minutes while indoor activities will include a maze, live critters, refreshments and more.
Cost:
$6, register at 908-766-2489 or on the Somerset County Parks website.

The Nature of Halloween
When/Where: On Saturday, 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. at the Somerset County 190 Lord Stirling Road, Basking Ridge, for ages 3 to 6 with adult.
Why Go: Explorers will join a staff naturalist to stroll the boardwalk around the Environmental Education Center and meet life size misunderstood animals such as a bewitching bat, wise owl, and howling coyote.  Indoor activities on Saturday also will include a maze, live critters, and more. Cookies and cider top off the event. Walks will depart every 15 minutes.

Free SAT Practice Test
When/Where: Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the 32 S. Maple Ave., Basking Ridge.
Why Go:
Doing is the best way to learn! Take a practice test that is free and offered by Kaplan Test Prep.
Cost:

Youth Dance and Halloween Costume Contest
When/Where: Friday, 7 to 10 p.m. at Long Hill Township Community Center  at 264 S. Warren Ave. off Valley Road in the Stirling section of Long Hill.
Why Go:
Because grades 6 to 8 can enjoy themselves at a Halloween bash in a supervised setting and parents can have time for themselves. Hosted by Columbus Club of Bernardsville and Basking Ridge and the Millington and Stirling volunteer fire companies, which are raising funds to celebrate the firefighting organizations' 100th anniversary.
Cost:
$10 includes light refreshments, chance at prizes.

Dog Walks at Lord Stirling Stable
When/Where: Morning hours resume for The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable's popular Saturday dog walks starting in September. The weekly event will be held at 10:30 a.m. with check-in at 10:15 a.m. at Lord Stirling Stable at 256 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge.
Why Go: This is the only chance to enjoy the beautiful trails of Lord Stirling Stable on foot — along with your best friend. Guided walks last for approximately one hour.
Cost: Registration is $3 per leashed pet. For more information, contact Martha at 973-635-8672.

Bernardsville Farmers Market
When/Where
: Saturdays, through the season, at the train station off Mine Brook Road just south of Olcott Square in Bernardsville.
Why Go: Because you can get the bounty of the season, fresh as can be, as well as gourmet goodies. (Hey, this is the Somerset Hills!)
Cost: Free admission, cost of purchases.

ComforTree 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk
When/Where: Saturday at 7:30 a.m. at Duke Island Park in Bridgewater.
Why Go:
Because this walk is designed to raise money to benefit cancer patients in New Jersey.
Cost:
$25.

Tech Open House
When/Where: Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Bridgewater Township Library on Vogt Drive.
Why Go:
Because it’s an opportunity to learn about your special electronic gadget or gizmo, when you bring it to the library and show it to the staff there.
Cost:
Free.

ICONic Boyz Dance Central 3 Meet and Greet
When/Where: Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Microsoft Store in the Bridgewater Commons Mall on Commons Way.
Why Go:
Because the band is coming for a meet and greet, and 10 of the people in attendance will be chosen to hang out with the band and battle for prizes.
Cost:
Free.

36th Annual Morristown CraftMarket
When/Where: Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., National Guard Armory, Morristown.
Why Go: You want to check out what has been called "a major cultural and charitable event, attracting thousands of visitors each year in addition to gifted artists from over 25 states throughout the country.”
Cost: $10 

'Market for Mission' at The Presbyterian Church in Morristown
When/Where: Friday, 7 p.m. (Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at The Presbyterian Church in Morristown
