High School State Playoffs Begin Today

Ridge boys ice hockey and basketball teams play their first state playoff games at 5:25 and 7 p.m. respectively.

Winter sports are coming to an end, but not before the boys of the Ridge ice hockey and basketball teams have a chance to go as deep as they can in the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association Playoffs.

The ice hockey team will play in their first match-up of the Public A tournament against Tenafly today at the Bridgewater Sports Arena at 5:25 p.m.

The Red Devils have reached the Public A tournament finals each of the last two seasons, winning the state championship in 2008, but the team suffered a loss of 14 seniors from last year's squad and went through a rebuilding year in 2009-10. With a sub-.500 record, Ridge needed help from the NJSIAA, receiving an at large bid to play in the state tournament. Ridge received the No. 13 seed in the tournament, and fellow at-large bid Tenafly received the No. 20 seed.

The Red Devils are coming off of a noteworthy run to the semifinals of the Skyland Conference Cup tournament, beating eventual Public A No. 10 seed Bridgewater-Raritan in the quarterfinals.

The goal all season long, according to head coach Tim Mullin, was to make the state playoffs. Achieving that goal, Ridge will have the chance to see how far they can get in the tournament starting tonight.

The boys basketball team enters the state playoffs in the North II Group IV bracket as the No. 4 seed overall. Fresh of a county championship, the Red Devils will take on Franklin High School at home at 7 p.m. tonight in the round of 16.

Ridge blew out Franklin in their one previous meeting earlier this year, 67-48. The earlier game was the quarterfinal match-up of the Somerset County Tournament, which Ridge eventually won in Franklin's gym against Gill St. Bernard's.

The winner of this game will go on to play the winner of No. 5 seed Bayonne and No. 12 Westfield on Thursday March 4.
