Many Sandwich Choices, Many Unique Names

Lots of sandwiches to choose from if you're in the Martinsville area.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Benny's Kitchen

Overview: Benny's Kitchen is nestled in the strip mall in Bridgewater, near the Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company, an Italian restaurant and other shops. It's a little difficult to find, but once you do, there are so many different selections, from your standard cold subs to specialty items with unique names.

Décor: The shop is fairly standard-looking, with a counter to order the food, and the meats displayed inside. There are about seven tables, and it's a little bit small, but it's comfortable and easy to sit and enjoy your food.

The Drinks: There is nothing in the way of alcoholic drinks because of the kind of shop it is, but there is a large selection of iced teas, sodas, water and other similar items.

Entrees: There are your usual soups, salads and cold subs offered at the restaurant, plus the special Benny's Organic Salad, with its greens, chicken, goat cheese, peppers, strawberries, toasted pignolli nuts, sundried cranberries and a lime and olive oil dressing. But aside from that, the restaurant offers a variety of specialty sandwiches, including my choice for the afternoon, The Michele, which is apparently one of the shop's fan favorites. The sandwich has delicious grilled chicken, roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella cheese, all together on a sub roll—all of my favorites rolled into one [plus the great name, Michele, conveniently also my middle name—though spelled with two "l's"]. Also on the menu is the Marco with roast beef, melted mozzarella, oil and pesto; the Sofia with grilled vegetables and mozzarella on focaccia bread; and the Carlo with roast beef, turkey, ham, salami, provolone, oil and pesto. Lots of great choices, I can't wait to go back and try something else. Plus, all sandwiches come with a choice of either macaroni salad, potato salad or coleslaw.

Desserts: There are no real desserts to speak of, but plenty of choices of chips and other similar snacky items.

Service: The service is really quick and great—when I was there, it was a little late in the day, so there weren't too many people eating, but I had my sandwich within a couple minutes. And it was service with a smile—my food was brought to my table after I ordered it, payment was taken after I had already eaten my food and my server was sweet and helpful.
