National Weather Service Issues Winter Storm Warning For Somerset County

The warning goes into effect tonight at midnight and continue until noon on Friday.

Yet another weather alert has been made by the National Weather Service for Somerset County this winter, this time a winter storm warning in effect midnight tonight until Friday at noon.

"A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring," according to the alert. "Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible."

The National Weather Service upgraded its snow accumulation predictions from over 4 inches earlier this week to the current prediction of 12-16 inches. AccuWeather is predicting anywhere between 8-17 inches, with the best guess prediction at 12.3 inches.

The cause is a low pressure system traveling north along the southeastern coast which is expected to turn inland around the New York-New Jersey area at its peak. The storm is expected to hover over the area on Thursday and into Friday, creating a scenario for another large accumulation of snow.

Precipitation is expected to begin falling tonight, with a possible accumulation of 1-3 inches by morning. Another 2-4 inches are expected to fall, mixed with rain, throughout the day on Thursday, according to AccuWeather. And the heaviest portion of the storm should fall on Thursday night with accumulations of an additional 4-8 inches of snow. Winds could reach 30 mph and cause power outages in the area, as well as make driving hazardous due to blown snow, according to the National Weather Service alert.
