New Lockdown Procedures Already in Bernards Schools

Even as parents were expressing concerns about further review of security in Bernards Schools, Bernards Township Police Chief Brian Bobowicz told the Board of Education and public that the police department, working with school officials, already had devised new lockdown procedures just prior to the Newtown school shootings.

As is the usual set-up in Bernards Township, the previous year's deputy mayor then moves up to mayor for a year. So, next year, Republican Carolyn Gaziano, who also will be sworn in to a second three-year term on the Township Committee, is in line to move up. Township Committeeman John Carpenter, who previously was mayor, said he is expected to move into the slot of deputy mayor on the five-member Township Committee.

Who Needs a Sleigh When Santa Has a Firetruck?

Along with raising funds for volunteer first responders in town, Santa brought lots of cheer all throughout Bernards Township when he rode on the Liberty Corner Fire Company's firetruck, and also hitched a ride on the Basking Ridge Fire Company truck. Parents made a donation to have gifts delivered to children on Saturday morning.

Vigil to Help Newtown Families 'Feel Less Alone'

The local Heartworks Foundation organized a vigil and poster signing on the lawn of the "Acts of Kindness" organization. The quiet, brief event was attended by parents and children, who also signed a poster expressing support for the town and families affected by the Newtown shooting.

Local Sikh Temple Holding Vigil for Newtown Victims

The Bridgewater Gurudwara on Washington Valley Road also held a vigil on Friday night. A member of the Sikh temple sadly observed that a vigil had just been held last summer after a massacre at a Sikh house of worship in Wisconsin.

Schools throughout the region increased police presence and began reviewing saftey procedures in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting.
