Oak Street Students Fulfill Holiday Wish List

Children donate and wrap gifts to be distributed through area organizations.

Students at Oak Street Elementary School in Basking Ridge continued a tradition of reaching out to needy children in New Jersey with “Holidays for Children” — donating the kind of holiday gifts they themselves would like — as part of the Character Education program.

A list of children was provided to the school by a local organization that works with various social service agencies such as Chabad Jewish Center in Basking Ridge Interfaith Council for the Homeless, and Children on the Green, according to the school.

Each class received a written profile of one child and his or her holiday wish list. The students brought in gifts for that child purchased with their own money, saved from piggy banks or earned through extra chores, according to the school

The classes then created a shopping list based on their budget and their child's wish list. Parent volunteers shopped for the children and the students wrapped the gifts, which were sent off with extra holiday cheer last Thursday, in order to be distributed to the children on the list.
